The Geospatial Informatics Department has received a gift from Mr. Thomas Dudley of some of his extensive collection of survey equipment. The donated equipment will be housed in a collection of vintage equipment in Wallace Hall. Dr. Niu and Dr. Hazelton received this equipment and discussed how it might be used in the education of students in the department’s programs. Some of the equipment is still usable and Dr. Hazelton intends to incorporate the use into his Geomatics labs. Other pieces are simply for historical reference to give students and visitors an idea of how much the geospatial industry has changed over the years. We appreciate Mr. Dudley’s generosity and thoughtfulness toward future generations of geospatial students. Mr. Dudley’s family have been generous supporters of Troy’s Surveying and Geomatics program and he is continuing this tradition. He returned to campus today to speak to the senior and sophomore classes about the history of survey equipment since the early 1900s. Our students have so much technology at their disposal that they needed to hear about how we got to this point in the geospatial field.
