You will often encounter in the outdoor space the mantra that knowledge is more important than gear.

But I think that is at best a false dilemma.

Knowledge + experience = Wisdom. Wisdom tells you to go buy a backpack, even if you, through the process of knowledge accusition have learned how to grow cotton or h**p, and weave cloth and conceive, prototype and sew your own backpack.

This last couple weeks have been intense. The wildfire smoke had me mostly holed up. But since it’s cleared I’ve been busy as the site has had lots of campers.

I’m Eating well, and so are my neighbors. Found the time to make myself a new hat band.

I tried to post this in response to a Leave No Trace thread. But was not allowed……

I am part of my ecosystem, not a foreign visitor to it. That’s always been my issue. My ecosystem sustains my life. While the LNT rules are not bad, the amplification of the basic tenets pretty much prohibits my existence. I go off trail to hunt. I walk around mud puddles because cellulitis is dangerous. I hunt cervids during the rut, and fish during the spawn, and collect fungi, all in violation of not disturbing wildlife during reproduction.

But if rich, urban euro’s want to police themselves go for it! But I live in my ecosystem year round.

This is much harder to fly fish than the Holy Waters….. Lots of spin cast debris that can put a hole in your waders as well.

On the way to the 2 Hearted I saw a sled dog operation and had to stop, of course. Laura the owner was so helpful and giving in her knowledge. Tika and I will have so much of a better time next winter just from our 15 min conversation! Check them out if you are in the area.
