About Instructor Shannon: "How did I get here? I am a parent just like you. In fact, that is precisely how I ended up where I am today and how I became a State Parks Lifeguard. With a background of learning to swim at the age of two, I grew up constantly in the water. I swam on the high school swim team to further refine my swim techniques.
In my mid-twenties, I began to surf and never looked back. In my early forties, I found myself surrounded by a bunch of adolescents in the beautiful and dangerous North Coast Ocean. At school events near the ocean, I would hear the other adults saying things like “It’s a good thing Shannon is here...She is a surfer and will be able to save these kids because we sure can’t!” That is when I realized that of course I would do my best, but I really didn’t have a clue as to how to make a proper rescue.
I had a couple of friends who were State Lifeguards in this area and asked them if I could join their weekend workouts. So it began. I soon went through the rigorous ocean lifeguard training. I have now served as a Lifeguard with the California State Parks for five years. Within that time, I have become EMT certified, jet ski and boat operator certified, rope rescue trained, and DUCK certified with the United States Coast Guard. I am also a seasoned swim instructor.
Over the last 25 years, I have taught surfing lessons and worked in surf camps. I am a lead instructor of the North Coast Junior Lifeguard Program which teaches over 400 kids each summer water rescue skills, CPR, general first aid, and efficient water entries.
I am constantly approached by adults wondering if there is a class they could take to be rescue trained in and around the water. That is why we have developed this program."
