Hello everyone, it's been a while since we updated here.
A little while ago at and the we received 6 sunflower stars from . We are ecstatic to have these animals at our facilty.

They have been great teaching and research tools for students and visitors alike. So far these 6 sea stars have been used for a feeding experiment for FISH375 Mariculture this last semester.

With any more luck next year we will have many more at Telonicher Marine Lab to further CPH's student and faculty research as well as teach the public about their importance.

We recently started a new trial run with urchins, purple and red. Don't worry, we're not trying to add to the overpopulated urchin problem. Most of these individuals, once settled, will be sent to other aquariums to feed their growing Pycnos.

Even though both Urchin species were started on the same date, the purple urchins grow faster, which in the wild could lead to outcompeting red urchin for settlement substrate and food in the wild

Last Wednesday, the Cal Poly Humboldt FISH472 Advanced Aquaculture class and us at Humboldt Seastars spawned the CPH Telonicher Marine Lab's bat stars. We induced spawning through heat shock and 1-MA injections. We collected gametes from male and females, then combined them and then stocked our larval vessels. We stocked our 8 larval culturing vessels with 10,000 fertilized eggs, each totaling to 80k individuals. The culturing of bat stars (and soon purple urchins) will be our way to refine our techniques for when we acquire sunflower stars.

Another Sunflower Star found at Baker Beach on 1/12/24 during king tides by a group of Cal Poly Humboldt Students and a Humboldt Sea Star team member. We are lucky to have such an involved student body and community supporting our journey to document these sea stars in the wild and culture them in the lab.

Hi All,
California Academy of Science and us at Humboldt Seastars are asking people to go out from Dec 10th to Dec 27 for the Solstice Sea Star Search when tides will be at their lowest to look in tidepools for Sunflower Stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides) and the Giant Pink Sea Star (Pisaster brevispinus). We ask that you use iNaturalist to report any sightings and to use to share your findings on social media. Pictured here is an approximately 2 year old Sunflower Star found at Baker Beach in Trinidad, CA found November 16th by Humboldt Seastar Team Member Dylan Pearce! If you'd like to learn more about the progress that Friday Harbor Labs is making and the goal that many institutions are working towards please come to a presentation by one of the foremost researchers in this field. Jason Hodin will be here November 15th at 5-6 PM in Science B room 133 to talk about Sunflower Star larval rearing.
