Why we all need Art Therapy!

Trauma often causes parts of us to be stuck back at the time of the trauma.

➡️This could mean that they re-experience similar feelings and scenarios again and again.

➡️This could also mean that those parts of us do not get a chance to evovle and mature. They stay young, with a certain kind of innocence or insecurity.

➡️When these parts of us remain unconscious or invalidated, they shape our world view, and often play havoc in our lives, especially our relationships. We also tend to shame those parts of ourselves and each others.

💣Truth bomb!
These traumatized parts of us are often ruling our relationships, our businesses and our systems. It’s time we move the social needle by doing deeper healing work.

Some of the ways these parts may hijack our relational experience include:

📌 believing everything we are told (and then being shocked when actions and words don’t line up)
📌 inability to express healthy emotions / articulate our experiences
📌 emotional outbursts / lack of containment
📌 finding it hard to make choices without asking everyone for their thoughts first
📌 inability to set healthy boundaries
📌lack of empathy / selfishness (my way or the highway)
📌 urgency ‘I need it now’ / inability to access patience
📌Fearfull of differences (anything foreign is marked as a threat)
📌 confused by complexity/incongruity / demanding rigidity and consistency (unable to accept people as textured, non-linear or inconsistent)

👉Healing asks us to learn about the parts of us that didn’t get a chance to heal, develop and mature. And to hold the space while they process, evolve and catch up.

👉Healing also asks us to understand that the people around us are on the same journey, and to be a little more forgiving of each other. This doesn’t mean not having boundaries or standards, but it does mean letting people have a little slack, the space to be non-linear and find their way towards or away from us.

➡️This is about giving each other grace to grow.

❓What do you think?

In art therapy, music serves as a powerful catalyst for emotional expression and healing, enhancing the therapeutic process and fostering connection in group settings.

Mental Health: Facing it. Feeling it.🫶

There is no other way to heal from trauma. The work is hard, it often gets messy and it can feel like we are not progressing at all.

But the smallest of actions can make the most significant impact - particularly for our children, who witness and are deeply affected by our emotions and consequent behaviours.

We each have our unique triggers. This might look like putting the effort into pausing before defaulting to shouting, or choosing not to reprimand our children for their dysregulated states and instead, learning how to honour and process their feelings safely.

Whatever you need to work on - know that it IS achievable and always worth it if we are to smash that cycle.

Benefits of Art Therapy: from Art Therapist Nicole Levy.

In my experience as an Art Therapist, I have seen time and time again the power of art to help people heal, and to gain deeper understanding of their feelings both physical and emotional. Please find below some of the benefits:

1. Emotional expression and regulation. This is one of the big benefits of art therapy, as the art expression allows a multi-faceted reflective process including the experience of the process of making the art, and witnessing of the Art Therapist and discussion of the artwork. An article from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association shares how art therapy has been shown to improve moods, promote relaxation, and decrease disruptive behaviors and attitudes (https://lnkd.in/gG4pCrNG).

2. Empowers and gives voice to experiences. This is a benefit that has far reaching impacts particularly for those who have experienced trauma. In my experience working with clients when they have voice and choice in their recovery it has significant power in their healing.

3. Develops healthy coping. Many clients who experience art therapy will often integrate into their methods of coping, for example when they are experiencing intense emotions they will turn to the art as a means of visual expression. Many clients have shared with me over the years that the art paired with other coping tools such as journalling or diaphragmatic breathing is effective in helping them move through the emotion and come out the other side feeling calmer and more centered.

4. Facilitates alternate perspectives. I have had client’s share several experiences over the years including in tuning into the felt senses of their body and expressing them through the art, they gained insight into their experience of their emotions they never felt before. And for many it helped them tune in more to their early warning signs of emotions, to use healthy coping strategies earlier on.

Curious to watch some videos about the benefits of Art Therapy, check out these two YouTube ones: 1. Overview of the process and benefits (https://lnkd.in/ghPsY5vC), and 2. Explanation of neuroscience and art therapy (https://lnkd.in/gWRf_Zy6).
