Waiting is weird.

Especially when you know something big is on the other side of it.

Right now, Joey and I are waiting for our foster home reapproval. We’ve done what we can do, and now there’s this strange in-between space where life looks mostly normal… but we know it could change very quickly.

There may be little people out there right now who will eventually sleep in the bedrooms we’ve prepared.

We don't know their names yet.
We don't know when we'll meet them.
We don't know what our family will look like a few months from now.

And that is a pretty humbling thought. ❤️

So for now, we wait.

We hope.
We pray.
We prepare.

And we trust that the next chapter will begin when it’s supposed to.

Funny how an author can spend her life writing endings and beginnings and still have absolutely no idea what happens on the next page of her own story.

Here’s to whatever comes next. ❤️

Since I’ve been MIA for a little while AND we have some newer people here, maybe it’s time for a reintroduction! 👋💕

Hi! I’m Jessica W. Bowman.

📚 Author of three books
✍️ Writer since I was about 7 years old
🎵 Music obsessed
💗 Lover of pink, purple, teal & anything sparkly
🐾 Dog/cat mom
💻 Freelance writer, content creator & graphic designer
🌊 Recovering people-pleaser
😂 Firm believer that even really hard subjects sometimes need a sense of humor
❤️ Wife to Joey
🏡 And currently waiting for the green light to become foster parents again!

My books are called Adulting 101, In Case I Die, and Making Waves, and together they make up The Life Happens Series.

That name pretty much sums up my writing philosophy:

Life doesn’t always go the way we planned.

Sometimes you’re figuring out how to be an adult.
Sometimes you’re figuring out how to survive grief.
Sometimes you’re figuring out how to stop living your life for everybody else.

My books aren’t textbooks or lectures.

They’re more like sitting down with a friend who says, “Okay… life got weird. Let’s figure this out together.”

Now tell me something about YOU! How long have you been following my page, and how did you find me? 💕

One of the biggest lessons grief ever taught me is that “someday” is a dangerous word.

Someday I’ll take the trip.
Someday I’ll call them.
Someday I’ll wear the ridiculous outfit.
Someday I’ll do the thing that scares me.
Someday I’ll stop worrying so much about what everybody thinks.

Then life happens.

Loss changed the way I look at time, and that became a huge part of In Case I Die.

It’s a book about death, but somehow it became even more about LIVING.

And if there’s one thing I hope people take away from it, it’s this:

Don’t wait until loss teaches you how precious an ordinary Tuesday was.

Do something today that makes you glad you were here. ❤️

Let’s do something FUN because I’ve missed talking to y’all! 😂

You get to keep only THREE:

📚 Books
🎵 Music
☕ Coffee
🐶 Pets
📱 Social media
🍫 Chocolate
📺 TV
✈️ Travel
😴 Naps
💰 Online shopping

Which three survive?

I’m already stressed about my own question. 😂

Tell me yours in the comments! 👇

“You are not responsible for other people’s happiness.”

Whew. 😮‍💨

I can write the book about boundaries and STILL need to remind myself of this.

That’s the funny thing about personal growth. You don’t graduate from it. You keep practicing.

You keep learning when to say yes.
You keep learning when to say no.
You keep figuring out which things deserve your energy and which things don’t.

And sometimes you realize that the version of you who worked so hard to keep everyone else happy deserves a little compassion, too.

That’s a huge part of why I wrote Making Waves: From Pleaser to Powerful — Reclaiming Your Boundaries.

So here’s your Saturday reminder:

💜 A gentle NO protects your powerful YES.

What’s something you’ve gotten better at saying “no” to?

I know I’ve been a little quiet over here lately… but life has been happening in a BIG way. 💕🌊

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may remember that Joey and I made the decision to open our home to fostering again after almost five years away.

Well… we are SO CLOSE. ❤️

The classes are finished. The house has been prepared. The paperwork, appointments, home study, and seemingly 8,472 little things are behind us. 😂 We are officially in the final stages and waiting for our reapproval.

And now we wait.

It’s exciting, terrifying, emotional, and a little surreal to think that our lives could change very quickly once that approval comes through.

That’s also a big part of why I’ve been quieter on my author page. Sometimes life gives you a season for writing and creating… and sometimes it gives you a season for getting bedrooms ready and preparing your heart and home for little people who may need you. ❤️

I’m still here. I’m still writing. I’m still Jessica.

There’s just a whole lot of LIFE happening behind the scenes right now.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to follow along. I’m excited to start hanging out with y’all over here again. 💕

Bonnie Tyler's passing hit me harder than I expected. 💔

Most people hear "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and think of an iconic '80s song. I hear the soundtrack to so many of the most important moments of my life.

I wrote an entire chapter in In Case I Die about Jim Steinman, the songwriter behind so many of the songs that shaped me. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was the #1 song when I was born, but it became even more meaningful because of my mom. She loved Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply... all those big, theatrical Steinman songs. They were always playing in our house.

One of my favorite memories happened during my mom's final week in hospice. We spent hours watching music videos, laughing, crying, and singing together. We performed "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" at the top of our lungs, completely unashamed. Looking back, I think that was the moment I stopped hiding who I really was, because seeing the real me made my mom so happy.

Now Bonnie has joined Jim Steinman, Meat Loaf, and my mom. It feels like another piece of that soundtrack has made its way back to them.

The music is still here, of course. Every time I hear Bonnie's voice, I'll think of my mom singing beside me, and for a few minutes it'll feel like she's right there again.

Thank you, Bonnie, for giving a voice to so many of our biggest feelings. And thank you, Mom, for teaching me to sing them as loudly as possible. ❤️
