Did you buy a guitar to keep yourself busy while cooped up at home for COVID-19? Not sure what to do with it? You need guitar lessons! If you're vaccinated and ready to get back to living life again, you're ready for lessons. Message me with your phone number and we can get started!
Many of my guitar students are young and need a smaller body guitar. So yesterday while I was in Guitar Center I tested every 3/4 size guitar they had and I was astounded at the POOR quality of their stock. Only TWO models played with decent intonation. One of the employees noted that indeed the intonation on these entry level instruments is "hit or miss." Of the models they had in stock, I was disappointed in the Taylors, the Luna, the Mitchell, and MOST of the Yamahas. I want to caution parents and others in the market for an entry level small size guitar against buying one off the shelf like this without bringing someone like me to make sure you're getting a decent instrument. An instrument that doesn't play in tune SOUNDS BAD, no matter how much you practice or how well you play. A student who can't get a good sound will be instantly discouraged! The two models they had in stock that DID sound good were these:
Yamaha JR1 which sells for $134
Martin LX1 which sells for $349
At $349 I know that doesn't sound like an "entry level" price, but Martin makes that kind of quality. If you can afford that price you will have an instrument your child can hand down to his/her children and they can hand it down to their children too.
It's time to get your lesson time on the calendar! Send me a message and I will get back to you. You can also email me at [email protected].
Lessons are 45 mins to an hour each, weekly in my private studio in New Bern, NC.
Fee is $30 per lesson. Payment for 4 lessons in advance is required.
Materials, books, sheet music are individualized for each student based on age, interest and ability, so these are billed separately or you can purchase what I recommend.
Students need to have a guitar of their own. If you need a guitar I can help you pick out one that is best for you and your budget. You will also need picks, music stand, pencils, a chromatic tuner, perhaps a strap, and probably a new set of strings for your guitar. I can help you find the things you need.
Students will be expected to practice of course. Parents may need to supervise this at home for their children.
I teach folk, popular, and classical techniques including the use of a pick and fingerpicking. You will learn to read both standard notation and guitar tablature. I will also teach you music theory, composition, and improvisation. I use a wide variety of musical literature including traditional folk, classical, blues, country, popular, as well as music from other countries.
Sometimes we have a JAM SESSION party, which is like a casual, fun recital where we play our favorites as well as play together and have fun! Students pay a small fee to cover for the food and beverages. Parents and friends are welcome as space permits. If enough students are interested we have Jam Sessions around December and June.
