Cooler mornings brings the thought of hunting to mind for many in the Driftless Area.

We occasionally hear from hunters who have spotted the Mississippi Valley Conservancy logo on a sign and wondered, “Can I hunt here?”

Here’s an important distinction: when a private landowner places a conservation easement on their property, they retain their rights to privacy and control of access. A conservation easement protects important natural features of the land for the future, but it does not automatically make the property open to the public.

Some of our conservation easement properties are open to public recreation, including hunting—but only when the landowner has chosen to allow public access. If you see a Conservancy logo on a sign, please look for additional information on the sign that indicates whether the property is private or open to the public.

When in doubt, please give us a call before entering. We’re always happy to help you figure out whether a property is open to public access.

Archers: Your purchase of equipment supports wildlife conservation through the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration program.

Manufacturers of archery equipment pay an 11% federal excise tax on the items below to help states manage wildlife populations and habitat, provide hunter education and support shooting sports and ranges.

– Compound bows, longbows, recurve bows and crossbows.
– Bow sights and sight extensions, levels, stabilizers, limbs, strings, wrist slings, silencing pads, grip formers, saddles and handles.
– Draw stops, kisser buttons, nocking points, bowstring silencers, tip protectors, brush buttons, cable guards and slides, bow covers, peep sights, finger protectors and draw check tools.
– Arrow shafts, field points, broadheads, arrow plates, quivers and arrow holders or rests.

Your involvement in shooting archery is financially supporting the strong conservation heritage of the wild Wisconsin.

Now's the time for hunters hoping to participate in the 2026 gun deer hunt for hunters with disabilities to contact and confirm their hunting location with a hunt sponsor before Sept. 15, 2026.

Sponsors have enrolled nearly 70,000 acres of land across 47 counties for this year's hunt taking place Oct. 3-11, 2026. Some properties can accommodate more hunters than others, so hunters are advised to contact potential sponsors as early as possible to determine availability.

Eligible hunters may sign up for one sponsored property per year and must possess a gun deer license.

New for 2026, the hunt will be statewide the same weekend as the Youth Deer Hunt (Oct. 10-11). During these two days, eligible hunters may hunt statewide on public land or a property they have permission for without the need to have the land enrolled in the program. The other seven days of the hunt (Oct. 3-9) will still need to be done on a property that is sponsored and enrolled in the program.

Free Fishing Weekend is June 6-7!

Wisconsin residents and out-of-state visitors can fish state waters without buying a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp. However, please know all other fishing regulations, including bag limits, size limits and species restrictions, remain in effect.

There will be fishing clinics providing simple, hands-on instruction such as casting, knot tying, fish identification and basic fishing techniques for those new to this sport. Wisconsin DNR Tackle Loaner Sites located statewide has rods, reels and tackle for participants needing equipment.
