Inspiring Youth & Choosing Hope! ✨

Driven by the belief that small acts of service change the world, Rebekah TenBrink (Class of 2014) is making a lasting impact as Founder and Executive Director of LIFT Teen Center!

Starting at NMC in her mid-twenties, she built confidence under dynamic professors whose flexible classes prepared her for social work. Inspired by her husband to choose hope and resilience over hardship, she turned her NMC foundation into a vision for youth. Today, she is focused on building the ultimate teen program for our community!

Healing & Serving Our Country! 🩺⚓

Resident physician anesthesiologist and U.S. Navy Officer Samuel Surgalski (NMC 2013-2014) takes immense pride in serving our country!

His educational foundation was built right here at NMC through small class sizes, invested faculty, and a supportive campus community. One of his proudest moments was earning his M.D. from MSU and having his family pin on his lieutenant bars. Guided by Abraham Lincoln’s philosophy to lead "with charity for all," Samuel completes his residency at Walter Reed in July 2026, plans to serve at a naval hospital, and looks forward to returning home to Traverse City with his wife. 🦉💚💙

Protecting & Serving Grand Traverse County! 🛡️🚔

Achieving a lifelong dream, Michael Shea (NMC 2002-2005) was elected Sheriff of Grand Traverse County—a milestone matched only by the pride of 38 years of marriage and raising two amazing children!

His law enforcement career was sparked at age 39, inspired by retired Detective Captain David Meachum and encouraged by his wife and NMC Academy Director Al Hart. NMC provided the essential training and lifelong friendships that built his foundation. Today, Michael’s working to make the Sheriff’s Office the best in the state while collaborating with community partners on a needed new correctional facility. 🦉💚💙

Leading & Serving Traverse City! 💙🏛️

Elected Mayor of Traverse City in 2023 after serving two terms on the City Commission, Amy Shamroe (NMC 1999) is a dedicated champion for our region!

As NMC’s Industry Navigator, she helps local businesses invest in their employees through the Sixty by 30 initiative. Amy credits NMC’s small class sizes and caring math instructors for building the foundation for her International Relations degree at MSU. Inspired by the founders of NMC’s International Affairs Forum, she continues learning through Extended Education while ensuring our workforce has the tools to thrive.

A Legacy of Innovation & Heart! 🚁🤖

Christopher Schmidt (Class of 2015) leaves a profound legacy of curiosity, generosity, and technological breakthrough.

What began as a classroom challenge in NMC’s makerspace grew into Interactive Aerial—an industry leader in robotic inspections that earned the Scale Up North Emerging Business Award! Beyond his success, he dedicated himself to helping others by mentoring young programmers and encouraging curiosity. Even during his illness, his selfless spirit shone as he contributed to medical knowledge to benefit future patients.

We are deeply honored to celebrate Christopher's extraordinary life with this year’s Outstanding Alumni Award 🦉💚💙

We couldn’t have asked for a better day to connect, celebrate, and share our Hawk Owl pride. We officially honored 20 of our 2026 Outstanding Alumni honorees—the living proof of our founders’ vision, driving progress, and making a daily impact across our region!

Whether this was your very first NMC event or your fiftieth, we hope it won't be your last.
