Xin nian kuai le (新年快乐) is a Mandarin phrase that means "Happy New Year “. January 29 marks the beginning of 15 days of celebration throughout the world as the New Moon 🌑 begins. 3rd grade artists learned 2025 is the Year of the Snake! Photo II students at West Senior High learn the “panning” technique with slow shutter speeds. The technique is used to convey speed, energy and motion while also have sharp details of the subject.

Photo II students at West Senior High “beat the heat” in September on the 80 degree days with a fast shutter speed challenge using water balloons. Advanced photo students use Canon DSLRs and Adobe Lightroom; learning to shoot in full manual mode and edit in Lightroom for full creative control over their images.

We love making meaningful connections fun! 5th grade artists at Willow Hill Elementary School - TCAPS formed embroidery circles while we chanted back with author Ashley Bryan and his book “Beautiful Blackbird”.
Students had a choice to celebrate influential black author and artist Ashley Bryan or to be inspired by March celebration of influential women and create tributes to the styles of Alma Woodsey Thomas. Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) ’shistorymonth

Westwoods artists loved taking advantage of the sunshine! Students reflected and shared while creating their Masks inspired by October studies of Central American and Hispanic Heritage month; then diving directly into November and Native American Heritage Awareness.
Students are connecting to how art has shaped human culture, and how art creation has help make us humanKind.

Our 1st graders missed the science unit covering the butterfly life cycle. That’s when we brought the science of camouflage and reflect of the color spectrum into art! Each student reused cardboard and created a two sided blue morpho. We also made them hang so the light can reflect off the blue iridescent scales. Enjoy! Westwoods Elementary School - TCAPS
