From Icebreaking to High-Tech Innovation! 🏍️🛰️⚓

From breaking ice on Lake Superior to pioneering satellite monitoring solutions for energy infrastructure, R. Peter Weaver (Class of 2006) has charted an extraordinary path!

As Market Developer and Client Advisor at Orbital Advisors, he achieved major industry adoption for satellite technology. His journey was anchored at NMC’s Great Lakes Maritime Academy (GLMA), where superior ship handling and hands-on training built his career. He fondly recalls Spring 2004 Meteorology with Mr. Mike Jacobson as his favorite class ever! As Peter looks toward retirement, he’s eager to explore the country by motorcycle and support his wife’s animal rescue efforts. 🦉💚💙

From NMC to Harvard & Beyond! ✨🏛️📚 Alexander Walsh (Class of 2012) proves that a great career can launch right here in Northern Michigan!

NMC served as his pivotal foundation, where he developed essential critical thinking and writing skills. His involvement with the International Affairs Forum (IAF) sparked a passion for public service and introduced him to key mentors, retired U.S. Consul General Jack Segal and Karen Puschel Segal. Now a graduate fellow on a full-tuition scholarship, he is preparing for law school to launch a career dedicated to serving others.

Lasting legacy, bold tomorrow. The Hagerty Center was filled with a celebration of both Saturday in honor of NMC’s 75th anniversary. Highlights included;

- A standing ovation for Ross Biederman and wife Brenda. Ross is the son of founder Les Biederman.
- Music from Audio Technology students.
- Congratulatory proclamations from Traverse City and state leaders.

A toast to the future led by President Nick Nissley, Board chair Mark Keely, event chair and alumna Peg Jonkhoff, and VP of academic affairs Stephen Siciliano.

John Lutchko, Director of the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, moderated an industry panel discussion yesterday, bringing together perspectives from key leaders in subsea sensing, GIS, autonomous mapping and freshwater science. It was also inspiring to see the next generation of freshwater leaders actively involved including NMC student Namith Kennedy stepping up to the mic to ask insightful questions during the panel Q&A! Mapping the Great Lakes takes cross-sector collaboration—uniting researchers, policymakers and industry pioneers.
