Coming from India, I knew a number of Afghan refugees settled in New Delhi who were some of the most hospitable and optimistic people I have ever met. The film is a tribute to those people who were made to flee their country, their home due to the never-ending war.

For research purposes, I visited and volunteered at a few refugee camps in Levos, Greece and interviewed women who told me that there weren't any feminine hygiene products available at the camps and the store products weren't affordable. Thus, they wrapped socks and old rags in their underwears during their period. I realized that something I took for granted was an absolute luxury for them.
'Ghazaal' is a film that talks about the absence of basic human necessities that are considered a privilege by women who're victims of war.

Paul's short films have received accolades from various International Film Festivals. Awards include Best Director, Best Writer, Best Film, Best cinematography, to name a few. His nominations encompass all categories of filmmaking and Directing. Most notable accomplishments include nominations for Best feature Screenplay at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Oaxaca International Film Festival. His short films are currently aired on the international media platform ShortsTV.
As an Independent Filmmaker, Paul is in the planning stages of producing a Feature Film.

SPOTLIGHT ON CYNDY GREEN: VISUAL STORYTELLER

Workshop Topic: It's not the wand but the magician that makes the magic:
Too often students either don't try making movies or don't make their best effort because they think they need professional or bigger/better/more expensive gear. From smart phones to inexpensive P&S cameras to make-it-yourself lights and other gear, you can make a movie on the cheap.

Cyndy Green is a highly skilled and experienced videojournalist, with more than four decades in broadcast news working as a cameraman, editor, and running live trucks. In that time, she covered major state, national, and international events including the Loma Prieta earthquake, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the downfall of communism in the former USSR. In 2002 she morphed from news to education, teaching high school broadcasting and English (as well as journalism, photography, and multimedia).

In addition to her numerous awards as a news cameraperson she also participates in the 48 Hour Film Project. Her 2015 entry (Give Yourself Some Time) won the San Jose city award and went on to compete in Filmapalooza, the international 48HFP competition.

Since retirement, Cyndy focuses on donating her extensive video storytelling expertise, time and resources to causes and projects that have special meaning to her.

Spotlight on GF Student Film Festival Juror: John Uribe

John is an experienced screenwriter, film director, and cinematographer specializing in commercial filmmaking. John has had numerous awarded films for cinematography run through the film festival circuits. When he isn’t working on films, he enjoys spending time with his family and writing screenplays in the narrative format. We want to thank Uprinting.com for supporting us with our printing of 20 unique graphic art pieces for our Student Film Festival Poster Design Contest Art Exhibition. The exhibition will be held from January 17 through January 27, 2020, in the Grand Theatre Center Community Gallery located upstairs at the Grand Theatre Center, in Tracy. This exhibition is in conjunction with our 4th annual Grand Foundation Student Film Festival, to be held on January 25. There were so many excellent design submissions and this is the first time we are featuring all 20 imaginative area high school student graphic-poster designs in a public arts exhibition. We are so excited and hope you will come and view the exhibition. The winner of the poster design contest will be presented with a scholarship award at the SFF Filmmakers Award Reception on January 25.

Capturing the essence of the Grand Foundation Student Film Festival, this original art design was selected out of 20 other colorful and creative designs submitted from Tracy area high school students. Thank you to all the teachers and students who participated in this arts education scholarship program. We are excited to get this poster art under final construction by Grand Foundation board director, Dave Garcia, of Dave Garcia Designs, who is putting all the event details together with Jordyn's impressive artwork. All 20 Poster Designs will be on display at the Student Film Festival event on January 25, 2020 at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts. Tickets are now on sale at: atthegrand.org.
