August 9 is and we are stoked to share our Week 3 video of the ! While Week 3 had lots of excitement - artifact washing, a visiJefferson Patterson Park & Museumuseum, and - the highlight for us was easily the final projects that our IndigeCharles County Public Schoolshools students created, showing their relationship to the land, the knowledge shared by
Piscataway knowledge-keepers, and what they learned through archaeology, history, and environmental science. The was developed collaboratively with the Piscataway Conoy Tribe and centered Piscataway perspectives, priorities, and connections to the archaeological record while intentionally welcoming Indigenous students regardless of Tribal affiliation. We are celebrating all of our students and partners today!

We are honored to have supported this project by monitoring construction to identify and document archaeological features. It's so exciting to see this project come to fruition!

As celebrates 134 years of , the historic newspaper is preparing for its next chapter with a move to the Upton Mansion in West . We might be biased, but Week 2 of the was our favorite. We got to have our Charles County Public Schools students in the field every day!

We had a lot of awesome visitors to the site during the , but one of our staples was the Charles County Public Schools videographer. He produced videos about each of the three weeks we spent on this program. Shout outs to the Piscataway Conoy Tribe, SMCM Archaeology, and Digging Deeper Educational Consulting without whom this program would never have existed.

Today we were super proud to graduate our first batch of students from the ! They spent the morning discussing careers and the afternoon presenting their final projects, which were incredibly original and thoughtful compilations of the knowledge they've gained throughout this program. We've been so lucky to work and learn with such a great group. Units are backfilled and it's time to go home!

It's been a busy couple days for our students. On Wednesday they visited JPPM and today they got to do more experimental archaeology with our staff. We can't believe tomorrow is their last day!

Our field crew finished the trench today! We found the old units, showing up as darker disturbed soil in comparison to the lighter subsoil. Had to get up high to document it. Our students washed all the artifacts we have recovered to date and got them ready for cataloging!

Today, after a week in the field, our students each got their own freshly sharpened MARSHALLTOWN Company trowel. They've earned them! Then they used them to clean up our trench.

It's day four in the field with the and we're digging a trench to find the extent of the units excavated in 1997. These guys are getting pretty good at digging square holes and identifying artifacts!
