If you are already subscribed to these spaces, there is no need for you to make any changes, but if you want to promote us to friends, family, and prospective students, be sure to highlight our new name starting this coming July!

Humanity and Paper Balloons (人情紙風船, Ninjo Kami Fusen)

This bold, 1937 historical anti-military melodrama is a gem of Japanese cinema. While following Edo-era slum residents—debilitated samurai, peasants, and petty merchants—and their struggles to survive, it exposes the hypocrisy and cruelty of high society. EMF thanks Dr. Dave Reiss for his contributions to the university and extends congratulations to him on his retirement.

Dave is retiring as Associate Professor. After a successful career as a producer and editor in the Washington, D.C. television market working on documentary and broadcast projects, he returned to graduate school to pursue a Doctorate in Communication Design at the University of Baltimore.

Since joining Towson University, Reiss has focused on connecting media production with community engagement. Through his community-based video courses, students have produced more than sixty short documentary and promotional films for local nonprofit organizations, helping students develop professional skills while serving organizations throughout the Baltimore region.

During his 21 years at Towson, he has taught courses in video production, TV studio operations, post-production, and color correction. For much of his time in the department he has also served as Internship Coordinator, helping guide students from the classroom into professional media careers. Dr. Reiss continues to advocate for hands-on learning and evolving production tools, emphasizing that the craft of storytelling—and the relationships built through it—remain at the center of media education.

Our gratitude and best wishes go out to Dave Reiss.
