The Class of 2030 participated in a century-old tradition earlier this week. The Founders' Day Convocation officially welcomes the incoming class to Colgate's community of scholars.

Following a formal dinner, bagpipers and faculty members, in full academic regalia, led first-year students inside the chapel for the convocation address.

Meet the Colgate Class of 2030

“Everyone who has a connection to Colgate is ecstatic when they talk to me about their stories there, and they all are still a part of the school today. Not one other college I had on my list had this sense of community and ability to connect people,” George McDonald ’30 says.

"I'm excited to be a part of a community defined by intellectual curiosity, challenging conversations, and compassion," says Maeve Welch ’30.

"I wanted to experience the community of a close-knit campus that allowed me to continue exploring newer avenues for myself, and Colgate offered me that," Landon Solorzano-Gonzalez ’30 says.

"I can’t wait for how Colgate will transform my life in the next four years," says Mercy Nsiah Akuoko ’30.

Colgate students in professors Catherine Cardelús and Eddie Watkins’ Tropical Ecology extended-study course took a three-week excursion across Peru, conducting research from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes Mountains.

The course’s central mission is immersion: Students physically interact with the ecosystems they studied in the fall semester, getting their hands dirty as they learn beyond theory.

“Many students don’t realize how well prepared they are or how capable they are of success. Watching [students] discover more about themselves is the absolute most exciting part,” Cardelús says.

His father played at Colgate, so did his grandfather and cousin; in a year, his younger brother will, too.

Luca Konrad ’30 is continuing the family tradition.

“I am super pumped for this opportunity to be a Raider,” Konrad said. “Growing up my whole life, I’ve been a huge Colgate fan. I’ve always been around the program due to my family history. When I decided I wanted to play football in college, I knew I wanted a great academic and athletic school.”

A Colgate-led initiative aims to preserve Dark Skies in Appalachia.

“Dark skies” are areas minimally impacted by artificial light, and are becoming harder to find as light pollution intensifies worldwide.

Jeff Bary, Sweet Family Chair and professor of physics and astronomy, invited Colgate students to spend their spring break collecting data and exploring Appalachian culture and landscapes in Virginia.

The group covered approximately 120 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. At night, they stopped every few miles to measure sky brightness. During the day, they hiked sections of the Appalachian Trail, sampled regional food and music, and danced at a Friday night jamboree at the famous Floyd Country Store.

“There is a real sense of awe people get from experiencing a truly dark night sky,” said Bary. “With that, there is this sense of perspective that comes with it that we all need: that there’s something larger than ourselves that also connects us to one another in ways that transcend space and time.”
