[ICILDER Keynote Speaker: Sir Tīmoti Kāretu]

It is with great honor that we announce Sir Tīmoti Kāretu as a Keynote Speaker for the inaugural International Conference on Indigenous Language Documentation, Education, and Revitalization (ICILDER).

Sir Tīmoti Kāretu is a professor, translator, author, songwriter, and key figure of the Māori language revitalization movement. His achievements include:

• Served as the first Māori Language Commissioner.
• Admitted to the Knights Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) in 2017.
• Received the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2020.

Reflecting on te reo Māori (the Māori language), Sir TÄ«moti Kāretu said that it ā€œreassures me that all is not lost in our battle for the language to be spoken more widely, without apology, thus giving credence to the mantra of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo, that is, 'The language needs to be heard far and wide; the language needs to be correct; the language needs to be Māori in ethos - Ko te reo kia rere, ko te reo kia tika, ko te reo kia Māori.ā€™ā€

šŸ‘‰ Hear from Sir TÄ«moti Kāretu and other inspiring presenters when you join us this October 12 - 14, 2023, in Bloomington, Indiana! Register now at icilder.org.

Last Saturday, attendees of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe’s Community Language Immersion Event were invited to test out the Ute language eLearning platform Nuuwayga.

Nuuwayga is the latest collaboration project between the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and The Language Conservancy. The tool offers a fun way to learn the Ute language, where users can earn points to unlock new lessons and rank on the leaderboard by practicing and reviewing the content. Educators can also build their own curriculum on the platform for usage in the classroom and online learning.

We are incredibly thankful to be a part of the Ute language revitalization movement through this project. We hope the members of the community had a great time exploring the platform at the event and that they will consider utilizing it in the future.

✨Update: Nuuwayga is up and online! Check out the eLearning platform at https://nuuwayga.com/
