The Northeast Region recently partnered with the Bradford County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission to restore 300 feet of highly eroded streambank along Schrader Creek on State Game Lands 12.
Several extreme weather events over the past decade exposed bare soil along the banks, threatening aquatic wildlife and the stream's health.
Agency staff worked with the conservation district staff and fisheries biologists to devise a plan, culminating in the SGL 12 habitat crew constructing 300 feet of stabilized and reinforced streambanks utilizing 2,260 tons of rock.
The teams also installed six stone in-stream rock vein deflectors to help with high-water events and provide additional trout habitat.
Thanks to favorable spring weather and less-than-average rainfall, the multi-step project was finished in just one month.
The Bradford County Conservation District has developed plans for 10 additional stream projects within SGL 12 over the next 10-15 years.
These project not only protect stream banks but also improve wildlife and fisheries habitat while increasing trout fishing opportunities for sportsmen and women!
