Brooker Memorial is a not-for-profit community organization established in 1918 by Charles F. The organization was named for and dedicated to his mother, Maria Seymour Brooker, in memory of her “works of benevolence, aid, charity and education.”

Maria Seymour Brooker was a devoted mother known in the community for her great love of all children. She was an early crusader of child and family suppo

rts, human services and open space for children to play. Early programs at Brooker Memorial included housing for local nurses, a day nursery, orphanage and playground for children. Current programs continue in the tradition of service to children. Brooker donated the family homestead where Brooker Memorial now stands. Brooker also established an endowment to ensure the success and longevity of this new organization.

The Early Learning and Child Care Center is “raising” birds again and this time it is Quail!

This week the quail eggs were placed in the incubator and the classes have been taking visits to see them. Over the next few weeks, the teachers plan to stop in to check in on their progress and answer some questions so they can create a small classroom journal about the quail.

Earlier in the year, the center hatched chickens and then they went back to the farmer after they hatched. The quail program is structured in a similar fashion. It is expected to take five weeks for them to hatch.

Parents – make sure that you register your child to get their teeth cleaned during this academic year if they are going to school in Torrington’s elementary schools and Torrington Intermediate School, as well as the elementary schools in Region One and Botelle School in Norfolk. Register Online: https://brookermemorial.org/pediatric-dental/school-dental-programs/

Brooker Memorial’s dental hygienist is starting her yearly schedule at Torrington Intermediate School and Sharon Center School.

All children are eligible to receive dental cleanings, fluoride, oral health screenings and sealants in grades Pre-K through eighth grade, regardless of who their dentist is. Parents are asked to provide dental insurance information and give Brooker Memorial permission to bill the insurance to help offset the cost of this program. We accept HUSKY. If you do not have insurance, families will not be billed for services provided at school.

Brooker is grateful to the Foundation for Community Health, Delta Dental of New Jersey and Connecticut and Hartford HealthCare, and Union Savings Bank for financially supporting the School-Based Dental Program. However, the grants do not cover all of the costs.

Brooker Memorial gratefully received 42 soccer balls Monday that were donated to the Early Learning and Child Care Center. Torrington Mayor Molly Spino met with preschool age children and administrators to present the gift that came to the City of Torrington from a donation by FIFA for the 2026 World Cup through the US Conference of Mayors.

Children are excited that they will be able to take the official soccer balls home with them. Each one has a printed label “FIFA Football for Schools.”

Congrats to ServiceMaster Albino for collecting 250 backpacks! Brooker's donors added at least half a dozen. They are still collecting monetary donations if you missed giving.

We want to thank everyone who donated backpacks, school supplies, hosted collection boxes, and shared our mission. Your support has been incredible!

While the collection has ended, there is still time to make a monetary donation and help us reach our close before we do our distributions to the charities next week.

This year, we've reached about 50% of our goal, and with your help, we can still purchase the backpacks and school supplies needed to support local students before the school year begins.

Every dollar makes a difference. Whether it's $10, $25, or $50, your donation helps ensure more children start the school year with the tools they need to succeed.
