As humans, our lives are filled with endless choices, and that extends to dog guardianship. There are so many ways we can choose to be in relationship with our dogs. Our dogs? They really don’t get a lot of choices. And still, so much of the language in the popular culture is around controlling, managing, and training our dogs, as if our dogs are in a constant bid for power, rather than simply trying to get their needs met. What if we started in the opposite direction? What if we found more ways to allow our dogs to make their own choices? What if we worked harder to understand their behavior in order to better meet their needs? What if we sought out more opportunities to let our dogs navigate the environment on their own terms? One of the absolute easiest ways to do this, in my opinion, is simply to let your dog sniff. If you can manage it, a daily sniff walk in a quiet, low stress environment can be an absolute game changer. Sniffing is such a powerful behavior for dogs, and has so many benefits! Finding plenty of opportunities to let your dog sniff and move freely can be one of the simplest ways to improve their overall welfare and quality of life. It's almost spring and grasses are going off here on the west coast...with all the rain I'm sure it's going to be another bad foxtail year. If you're not familiar (lucky you), foxtails are the name given to a class of exotic grasses that produce a cluster of spiky seeds. The seeds drop off and scatter along the ground throughout the late spring, summer, and fall. Foxtail seeds are a HUGE hazard to dogs as the seeds can burrow into their skin, eyes, ears, nose, mouth and cause infection and internal injuries. It's critical that if foxtails grow anywhere you walk with your pup, that you're careful and vigilant in order to prevent foxtail injury.
