Academy Friends,

I’m officially closing my Bend Academy this week due to low enrollment and unfavorable economic conditions for growth. We had a fantastic 1st year and I’m very grateful for my amazing teacher and staff who took the challenge to open up there. We had great families who joined as well as many supporters who wanted us to succeed.

I love Bend and plan to visit now on vacation only😁

Chanler started with me in 4th Grade and just finished his Junior Year.... I was devastated to hear the news of his passing. Everyone from staff to his fellow students loved his smile, laugh, and kindness.
With the family’s blessing, we will be setting up a Scholarship Fund in his honor to allow a student in need to attend the Mr. J's Academy.
His parents told me that the Academy was his “happy place” and changed his life for the better.

The past 2 school years have been challenging for everyone involved in educating kids due to the pandemic, especially for parents. Mr. J's Academy listened to the parents and provided several options so the students were not going to be left behind.
This was especially true for students with learning challenges who found it difficult to work only online. For the past 12 years, the staff has dedicated themselves to working with the parents to provide the best possible education for their child as well as introducing them to the world of outdoor sports to expand their horizons and challenge them to push themselves physically and mentally.

We are one of the very few schools in SoCal that provide this type of service and experience. From surfing local beaches to snowboarding the Big Bear resorts, we have always utilized the outdoor resources that SoCal has to offer.

Due to our small size, we have a very limited number of spots available from Grades 3 to 5 in our Elementary and Grades 6 to 8 in our Middle School.

The Academy HS Tutoring Center also has 5 openings in its program from Grades 9 to 12.

First big field trip of the year, paddleboarding in the Redondo Beach Harbor with Olympus boardshop! The middle schoolers had a blast and said they loved the academy!
Day 2 of Paddling with ES crew, they loved playing Pirates and stealing my hat and life jacket.... being a kid again was so much fun!

We have had an awesome recruitment for new students this year.
We have the following openings:
Elementary (K-5) 2 Spots
Middle School (6th to 8th)- 1 Spot
High School ( 9th to 12th)- 2 Spots

We have several options available for parents and if your student has an IEP, we specialize in working with them to achieve and exceed their goals.

After careful review, the Academy is planning on opening full time in Sept with the necessary precautions in place. We have had zero reported instances of staff/student/ family having testing positive for Covid 19.
Due to the small class sizes and space available, we will have the following options for parents:
1) Full-time in class instruction
2) 75% in class work and online instruction
3) 50% in class work and online instruction
4) Online only with staff conducting virtual lessons

We are opening up a Kindergarten 1/2 day program this year so we are officially a K-12 Private School.

(Boating, wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, hiking, tubing) Limited to 4 kids max- FULL

July 13-17 day camp-Japanese Lang/Culture- limited to six kids max 9 AM to 2 PM ( 3 Spots Open)

July 27-31 day camp
Inventions - limited to six kids max 9
AM to 2 PM (FULL)

Aug 3 - 7 day camp
Board Game Design-limited to six kids max 9 AM to 2 PM (5 Spots Open)

Aug 24-28 day camp
Rocketry-limited to six kids max 9 AM to 2 Pm (2 SPOTS OPEN)

Masks required in class only, day camps are 2 hours in class and 3 hours of lunch/outdoor activities like beach/surfing/paddling, fishing and hiking!

However, we are making the most of it and enjoying something new

Been awhile since we have posted much, so busy with all the new changes happening with the Pandemic.

Here is an update for the High School Academy- Today we started remote tutoring for your 7 students... each tutor was assigned their students and we used Google Hangouts to do video conferencing and screen sharing. It has worked really well so far!

Tomorrow we will utilize the same concept with our Middle and Elementary students, we have 16 total so more of a challenge but most of our curriculum is already online so ready to go for it!

Smaller class sizes, individualized instruction, dedicated staff and the ability to make swift changes immediately is why Mr. J’s Academy is a solid choice for your child’s education.
