This weekend, I had the opportunity to meet 李连杰 Jet Li, a man whose films inspired me to begin my Kung Fu journey over three decades ago and ultimately become a Sifu.

His portrayal of the legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hung in the “Once Upon a Time in China” film series had a profound impact on me. In the pre-internet era, that inspiration led me to seek out the lineage of Hung Gar Kung Fu, become a dedicated student of my Sifu, YC Wong, and join the martial lineage connected to Wong Fei Hung himself. Later, I was also privileged to learn Kung Fu from my Sifu Raymond K. Wong. For the past two decades, I’ve had the honor of passing those traditions on to students of my own at Tiger Crane Kung Fu

In recent years, I’ve hoped to inspire a new generation to explore the study of Kung Fu through Shadow Ghost, my comic book series that serves as a love letter to the martial arts films that shaped my journey as both a practitioner and teacher — including the films of Jet Li, whose work helped ignite my passion for Kung Fu in the first place.

It was both a pleasure and an honor not only to meet Mr. Li and receive a copy of his new book, “Beyond Life and Death,” but also to attend a theatrical screening of “Once Upon a Time in China” — my first time ever seeing the film in a theatrical setting — preceded by a Q&A session with Jet Li and his daughter, Jane.

The impact he has had on myself and countless others is immeasurable, and I’m deeply moved by his continued commitment to sharing the lessons and philosophy he has gained through his films, his life experiences, and now through his new book and beyond.

Had a great time catching up with martial arts actor Quinlan Darnell over some incredible Cuban food at Versailles.

Quinlan is part of a new generation of rising talent in action cinema, and it’s always inspiring connecting with artists who are pushing things forward. We had a great conversation about martial arts, film, and our respective creative journeys—always good to exchange ideas and perspectives.

Also had the chance to congratulate him on the recent addition to his family—an exciting new chapter.

I was excited to receive my copies of Undead Kung Fu: Ghost Killer by PLUGOarts This mystical tale, steeped in Chinese mythology, comes from the world of A Tiger’s Tale, and Patrick has done a tremendous job bringing this story to life.

He kindly sent three different editions with special covers, including the variant cover I illustrated and a very special hand-drawn custom cover featuring one of my favorite yokai, the Kappa.

If you’d like to see more of Patrick’s work, be sure to check out the upcoming exhibition at Sun Gallery and Marker Space

It was a true honor to meet with Sensei William Christopher Ford and filmmaker Jim Towns this weekend to work on an upcoming project.

I want to give a special thank you to my Kung Fu brother, Sifu Jeremy Hector of Lion's Pride Kung Fu, for the introduction and for making this connection possible.

Sensei William Christopher Ford is a remarkable example of the martial path in action. Through his leadership at Kaizen Dojo and his iconic roles in The Karate Kid Part III and the Cobra Kai series, he continues to elevate the arts. Paired with Jim Towns’ expertise in filmmaking, their work is a stellar example of how to document and celebrate martial arts of all origins.

Stay tuned for updates and the forthcoming announcement of what we have in store!

Another great screening by the Hong Kong Cinema Club at The Eastwood. This month’s feature was Jackie Chan’s 1989 crime-action comedy Miracles.

It was a real treat to experience the film on the big screen, where the charisma of Jackie Chan and Anita Mui truly shined.

The evening was made even better by a charming introduction from the Hong Kong Cinema Club founders, followed by an insightful talk from Hong Kong cinema experts, producer Frank Djeng and writer, producer, and showrunner F.J. DeSanto.
A fantastic night celebrating classic Hong Kong cinema on the big screen.
