📢 Are You Training at the Right Distance?

According to the article “What’s the Best Distance to Practice At for Self-Defense?” on MultiBriefs, most shooters are training at distances that don’t reflect real-world self-defense scenarios. 😱

Here’s what you need to know:

🔑 Key Fact:
The vast majority of self-defense encounters happen within 7 yards (21 feet) or less. These are close-quarters situations where reaction time and accuracy under stress matter most.

💡 Common Misconception:
Many shooters spend time much of there time practicing at distances of 15-25 yards or more. While this builds good marksmanship, it’s not preparing you for the realities of defending yourself in a high-stress, close-range confrontation.

✅ Why Close-Range Training Matters:

➡️ Real-life encounters are FAST: The attacker is often within steps of you before you even draw your firearm.
➡️ You need practical accuracy: Precision at 25 yards won’t help if you can’t quickly and accurately hit your target at 5-7 yards.
➡️ Stress plays a big role: Repetition at realistic distances helps build muscle memory and confidence when the stakes are high.

🎯 How to Train Smarter:

Practice drawing from concealment and engaging targets at 3-7 yards.
Include movement, barriers, and timed drills to simulate real situations.
Don’t neglect your fundamentals—grip, trigger control, and sight alignment all matter, especially at close range.

👉 Bottom Line: If you’re serious about self-defense, make sure your training reflects the reality of close-range encounters. It’s not just about shooting; it’s about surviving.

A home invasion in Michigan turned into a violent shootout, leaving the homeowner, Benjamin Nevers, and his girlfriend injured. The terrifying moment was caught on camera as Benjamin defended himself against a gunman who broke into his home.

What Happened:
- Two suspects broke in through a kitchen window while Benjamin and his friend were inside.
- His friend was held at gunpoint in the living room while Benjamin, realizing what was happening, grabbed his gun and waited.
- The gunman entered his room, sparking a shootout. Benjamin was shot in the foot and back, while his girlfriend was hit in the back, with the bullet lodging in her chest.
- Surveillance footage later captured the injured suspect struggling to escape.
- Police arrested Phillip Price, who now faces 21 charges, including assault with intent to murder and armed robbery.

🔹 What We Can Learn:
- Firearm Choice & Recoil Control:** A firearm with lots of recoil plus being under stress, accuracy suffers. This is why training is critical.
- Handguns Aren’t Manstoppers: A rifle or shotgun could have ended the fight sooner. Handgun rounds don’t stop threats instantly.
- Magazine Capacity Matters: The bad guy had a **G***k with an extended mag**—this is why magazine restrictions hurt law-abiding citizens more than criminals.
- Positioning is Key: Trading shots in open space got Benjamin and his girlfriend hit. Knowing cover vs. concealment before a fight starts is crucial.

We got many questions and emails asking our thoughts on various topics. This one is pretty common.

We do not have unquestioning loyalty to any one style. We have a strategy that we think works best as a counter against an active attack.

Any technique that can meet the requirements for any point within the strategy is welcomed.

Boxing satisfies any need you might have for striking or distance management while standing.

Wrestling has excellent techniques that help you control a person while standing, take them to the ground if required, and return to your feet rapidly.

Jiu-jitsu is a good option for minimizing or maximizing friction while on the ground.

Be agnostic in your procurement of techniques. If it serves the goals of your strategy then adopt it.
