The meaning of Yom Kippur
G'mar tov! Today marks the start of Yom Kippur. We worked with designer Alex Woz to commemorate the day and discuss what the holy day means to them. Here's what they had to say, "For me, Yom Kippur is the time to take stock of my relationship to HaShem (God), and reflect on all of the things that He has done for me. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year for Jews.
On this day, we typically fast, and abstain from any sort of labor or exertion in an effort to purify our physical and spiritual forms.
Personally, I strive to spend Yom Kippur in a state of constant self reflection, constantly seeking to become more introspective to find ways to be the best person I can be to all those around me, my loved ones, and HaShem. We believe that our livelihoods are decided during the period between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, leading to the phrase “g'mar chatima Tovah”, which means “May you be inscribed in the book of life.” This period is an extremely sensitive energetic time for the Jewish people, leading many of us to do conscious good deeds (mitzvot) like give charity for the good will of the coming year.
Celebrating Yom Kippur is an excellent way to get closer to the identity of our indigenous Jewish ancestors and their way of life. Even if you’re non-religious, I think honoring Yom Kippur is a powerful ritual for cleansing toward the new year."
