Heights Academy "the arts" are more than just an extra-curricular activity; they are integrated into everything we do - academics, therapy, social development, and recreational activities. Integrated arts are the core of our therapeutic program. Lava Heights Academy is a place where true commitment and love for the arts is evident in everything we do. Moreover, at Lava Heights our approach to residential treatment is based on care, concern, and the safety of each individual. This includes environmental safety, which means every student feels safe because they have the freedom to express themselves in appropriate ways. Our professional staff are trained in Positive Peer Culture and teach Principle-based Living Skills. The staff at Lava Heights are positive role models (life coaches), teaching and encouraging pro-social behaviors through integrated arts. 24 hour supervision and professional care is provided in all aspects of our program.

Lava Heights students were able to have a wonderful learning experience with guest artist Naomi Owen! Naomi taught our students some abstract art techniques, including different ways of approaching "pour art." Students were excited by these new techniques, finding magic in allowing themselves to explore and get messy. We are so grateful that Naomi was willing to come and share her knowledge, talents, and warm personality with us. You can check her out on facebook at Naomi Owen Art or her website at naomiartsowen.wixsite.com.artnaomi.

Many, many thanks to the St. George Dance Co. for the time, energy, and care they put into their work with our students. It was a truly powerful experience for all involved. Please come back and visit us again!!

St. George Dance Co. performed an outreach program 11/16/18 at the Lava Heights Academy. This interactive program was so well received! We took a lot of fun pictures of our dancers working with the residents but then found out we can not post full face shots for their safety/privacy. But there are two glimpses of the dances we made with them... as well as photos of dances we performed for them. It was a wonderful experience for all!

Honored to be a part of such a powerful and important show!

ST. GEORGE – It’s America’s first holiday, Thanksgiving, a tradition that began hundreds of years ago when a handful of isolated immigrants were invited by our country’s original residents to take part in a feast of food and thanks for a successful harvest. One local businessman, himself an immigran…

Thomas Blanchard used acrylic paint and a few common kitchen items to create "an analogy to feelings, such as joy, hatred, love, sadness, and so on. All these emotions come and stir together before they soothe and let go." The result is a beautiful and mesmerizing video.

"The Colors of Feelings" is an experimental dreamlike video rocking us smoothly through circular moves. It is also an analogy of feelings such as anger,…

Finding an entire hour in your day to listen to a discussion on creative arts therapies is asking a lot - however, if you have even a few minutes to listen to these therapists introduce themselves and speak about their work, it's worth it! They have some excellent insights into the power of combining therapy and the expressive arts.

Innovative and effective approaches to therapy involving the arts - both visual arts and music. Who can benefit, how to access this therapy and what Maine

Often times, painful emotions require therapeutic techniques that go beyond verbal processing. These are some simple ways to explore difficult feelings creatively.

Many of us have a hard time coping with negative emotions. This makes sense. “Painful feelings like anxiety, sadness, anger and shame tap into the parts of our brain that are connected to survival,” according to Joy Malek, M.S., a licensed marriage...

"Songs are powerful things. Songs tell the truth that we are not alone; they remind us that others have felt the same way. Songs say it is OK to feel how you feel. It is OK to struggle. It is OK to cry and scream and shout and perhaps sing as well. It is OK to feel stuck between verses."

"Music provides a way to make sense of a world full of contrast, one that is at once beautiful and terrible, both broken and hopeful."
