Baleen whales eat only plankton. Myth!

Baleen whales actually have different diets depending on the species. Some feed heavily on krill and copepods, while others also eat small schooling fish and even squid. Their baleen plates act like a giant filter, trapping food inside the mouth while the water flows back out.

So while plankton can be part of a baleen whale’s diet, it definitely isn’t the only thing on the menu.

How many whales are there in the world?

There isn’t one simple answer because each species has a very different population size. Some are found in large numbers, while others are much more at risk. For example, the latest estimate for North Atlantic right whales is only about 384 individuals.

Scientists currently recognize 94 species of cetaceans, which includes baleen whales, toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

Each species is different, and the more we understand about them, the better we can appreciate and protect them.

MYTH! Whales don’t actually blow seawater out of their lungs.

When a whale comes to the surface, it pushes warm, moist air out through its blowhole. As that warm breath meets the cooler air above the ocean, it quickly turns into tiny droplets, creating the visible “spout” we see. A small amount of seawater around the blowhole can also get caught in the spray.

Here’s another interesting fact: the shape of a whale’s blow can sometimes help scientists identify the species from a distance. Different whales can produce blows that vary in height, shape, and direction.

So even though it may look like a whale is shooting water into the air, you’re mostly seeing its breath!

How long do whales live? 🐋

The answer varies a lot depending on the species, but what’s especially fascinating is how scientists figure out a whale’s age in the first place. Since wild whales don’t come with birth records, researchers study clues in their bodies, including growth layers that build up over time. In some species, these layers can be found in wax-like earplugs and counted much like the rings of a tree.

Some whales can live for many decades, while bowhead whales may live for more than 200 years, making them the longest-lived marine mammals known! Studying whale lifespans helps scientists understand not only how long these animals survive, but also how they grow, reproduce, and how populations change and recover over time.
