Garfield Elementary School Garfield Elementary is a public K-5 grade school in the heart of Toppen*sh, Washington.

The staff at Garfield school is committed to providing the best education possible for our students. We have over 420 kindergarten through fifth grade students involved in a variety of school day and extended school day activities. We are members of the Washington State Reading First initiative that supports high quality, researched based reading instruction for all Garfield students. Our school is also a member of the LASER science initiative that provides high quality training and materials in "hands on, minds on" science instruction. Garfield students can also take advantage of after school homework help, reading tutoring, test preparation classes, intramural sports, Family Fun nights and ESL and literacy classes for their parents.

Garfield Elementary celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of our Hispanic community! 🌺

A heartfelt thank-you to all our sponsors who donated delicious treats. Pan dulce from El Porvenir Panificadora. Thank you to the Montiel Family (Old Town Cafe) and Lucía Ochoa for donating refreshing aguas frescas! As well as Bernice for the delicious durritos ❤️

This Thursday, our students will have the opportunity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month during lunch! Students are also encouraged to dress in their best Hispanic Heritage-inspired outfit to help us celebrate!

Orange Shirt Day is Wednesday, September 30, 2026! 🧡

Toppen*sh School District will observe Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. This important day raises awareness of the devastating impact of the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples and American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities across the United States and Canada.

Much of the Indian Boarding School experience brought immense trauma in many forms. By acknowledging this history, learning together, and promoting awareness, we take steps toward healing for our Indigenous and AI/AN students, families, and community members.

❔️How can you participate❔️
We invite all students, families, and staff to wear an orange t-shirt or clothing item in honor of residential school survivors and in remembrance of the children whose lives were lost.

Together, we affirm that every child matters. Remembering the history and legacy of residential schools is a vital part of the reconciliation process and aligns with the important work of the Truth and Healing Tribal Advisory Committee of Washington State.

Thank you for joining us in this meaningful day of learning, honoring, and healing. 🧡
