This past weekend, we had the privilege of taking a group of students to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists in Pittsburgh, PA. It was an unforgettable experience!

We explored the vibrant “Steel city" participated in cultural activities. The students had invaluable opportunities to connect with peers, engage with graduate programs, and expand their professional networks.

A highlight of the conference was seeing five of our students represent Heritage at the national level presenting their summer research projects. We are proud of Jari Tavira who was an ABRCMS Presentation Awardee for the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Health discipline.

Overall, it was an inspiring and enriching weekend filled with learning, celebration, and growth!

We had the great privilege of visiting the University of Hawai’i at Mãnoa where students had the chance to explore the various graduate programs available. Additionally, the student participated in a campus tour and engaged in cultural activities.

The McNair Scholars Program at Heritage University is now accepting membership applications. McNair prepares first-generation students who are underrepresented in higher education to pursue doctoral studies. The program will help students earn a high G.P.A., putting them on a path to a fully funded graduate program where they can obtain a Ph.D., DNP, Pharm.D., or MD-PhD.

The McNair Scholars Program helps students develop academic skills and rounds out their college experience with fun and exciting cultural activities. Female students in STEM fields are highly encouraged to apply, but all students can apply for McNair. Click on the flyer for more information.

On May 14, 2022, Heritage University held its 40th Commencement at the Yakima Valley SunDome. Family, friends, faculty, staff, and community all came together to celebrate the Class of 2022. We are so proud of all Heritage University graduates, especially the 12 McNair Scholars who walked on that stage to receive their diploma. A HUGE Congratulations to Marissa Mendoza, Roma Cantu, Antonio Franco, Tashae Gomez-Jones, Reina Luna, Elisa Mariscal, Andrea Martinez-Santiago, Alfredo Reyes, Amarilis Santiago, Karly B. Serrano, Daniela Solis, and Dehlia Wolftail! We also want to congratulate Karly B. Serrano on earning the 2022 President's Student Award of Distinction!

Heritage University student and McNair Program scholar Miguel Mendoza will spend this summer on a research project with the University of Washington in Seattle. Mendoza will participate in the 2022 Center for Neurotechnology Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, and will be placed in the "GRIDlab" at UW.

"I believe this opportunity with Drs. Raj Rao, Jeff Ojemann, Jeffrey Herron at GRIDlab will help me grow as an individual and will allow me to dive into the field of neuro surgery, which is a great fit for me as I continue my journey towards becoming a doctor," said Mendoza. "I am very thankful for Dr. Bob Kao, McNair Program coordinator Dr. Laura Zamudio-Orosco, and Nora Coronado from the University of Washington, this wouldn't have been possible without them."
