This is what learning can look like when school is built around the kids. ❤️

Small groups.
Hands-on projects.
Movement.
Curiosity.
Lots of questions.
And plenty of room to learn differently.

At Gatherpoint Learning, we’re not trying to recreate traditional school in a smaller room. We’re creating something different—an environment where students are known, supported, challenged, and given more freedom to learn in ways that work for them.

This is why we believe there should be more choices in education.

What if school could fit your child—instead of your child having to fit the school?

That question is a big part of why we opened Gatherpoint Learning.

We believe kids learn best when they are known, supported, appropriately challenged, and given room to learn in ways that make sense for them.

And we believe families deserve more educational options, too.

Gatherpoint may be a good fit if you’re a parent who:

❤️ Wishes you could homeschool, but needs to work
❤️ Wants to be more involved in your child’s education
❤️ Wants more time with your kids
❤️ Is looking for something different from public school or a highly structured traditional private school

Our students spend just 5.5 hours a day, 4 days a week in a small-group environment where academics are specially crafted by expert education engineers to be hyper-individualized, hands-on, flexible, and meaningful.

We’re a small private school for grades 3–8 in Topeka, and we’d love for you to come see what makes Gatherpoint different.

Middle schoolers deserve recess, too. 🛴🚲🛼

At Gatherpoint Learning, movement isn’t something kids have to earn after they finish their work. It’s part of a healthy school day.

Our students get opportunities to move, reset, connect with friends, and have fun—while also receiving the individualized academic support they need.

Because when kids feel known, safe, supported, and engaged, they’re in a much better place to learn.

Small private school. Hyper-individualized learning.
A place to belong.

So…what exactly are they doing here?

No, there isn’t a study showing that dangling your feet in a kiddie pool makes you better at math. 😄

But there is a surprisingly interesting body of research on what happens when kids learn outside.

A systematic review of school-aged children found that exposure to nature can support attention and working memory — two abilities kids rely on constantly while learning.

And in one classroom study, students who had a lesson outdoors came back inside more engaged, with teachers needing to redirect their attention much less often.

There’s a catch, of course.

Simply moving school outside doesn’t automatically make the lesson better.

But sometimes the environment itself can make it easier for a child to be ready to learn.

And parents can borrow this one pretty easily:

Take the book outside.
Do spelling on the porch.
Talk through a lesson while walking.
Read under a tree.
Change the scenery when everyone’s brain is fried.

You don’t need a curriculum overhaul.

Sometimes you just need to leave the kitchen table.

And if you love the idea of giving your child more varied ways and places to learn but don’t have the bandwidth to build that into every school day yourself, that’s one of the things we get to do at Gatherpoint Learning. We have full time and a-la-carte options! Message us today to find out more or to come meet us. We'd love to see you!

Are the kids actually learning when they do school this way?

The research says yes.

But there’s a catch.

A 2026 review of 15 meta-analyses found project-based learning consistently favored traditional instruction across academic achievement and higher-order thinking.

Research on guided play has also found benefits in areas like early math, spatial learning, and some executive-function skills.

So what’s the catch?

The activity itself isn’t the magic.

A pile of LEGOs is just a pile of LEGOs.

What matters is what the child has to do with it:

predict → build → explain → test → adjust → try again.

That’s the difference between simply keeping a child busy and designing an experience that makes them think.

And here’s the good news for parents: you don’t need elaborate projects to use this at home.

Try changing one homework question:

Instead of “What’s the answer?” ask:

“How could you prove it?”

Or:

“Can you build it?”
“Can you show me?”
“What do you think will happen?”
“What would you change if you tried again?”

Small shift. Very different kind of thinking.

There is one problem, though.

Doing this consistently takes time.

And if you’re like a lot of parents, you’re already doing approximately 47 heroic things before dinner.

You don’t necessarily need another job called curriculum designer.

That’s where Gatherpoint comes in.

At Gatherpoint Learning in Topeka, we build hyper-individualized learning around the child—with project-based learning, hands-on experiences, and real community woven into the school day.

You don’t have to create it all yourself. We’re happy to partner with you.

Full-time and à-la-carte options are available.
