The establishment of the Office of Early Childhood strengthens Kansas’ ability to support children and families during the years when language, vocabulary, and early literacy skills are developing most rapidly. This work complements the vision of the Blueprint for Literacy by creating stronger connections across the systems that support children’s learning from the very beginning.

Yesterday, educators, students, and community partners gathered to celebrate the completion of the summer literacy lab pilot.

While the early data suggest promising outcomes for students, the focus of the afternoon was on learning. Teams examined what worked, identified areas for growth, and explored ways to strengthen implementation moving forward. The willingness to reflect, collaborate, and continuously improve was evident in every conversation. Student success is always the goal, but this pilot was a powerful reminder that strong outcomes begin with great educators. The path to stronger student literacy outcomes starts with supporting and empowering the educators who make them possible.

K–2 students are receiving reading instruction through the Summer Literacy Lab — a partnership between WSU CLEAR, Wichita Public Schools, Kansas State Department of Education, Wichita Collective Impact, and Kansas Board of Regents.

But here's what makes this different: future Kansas teachers are training in those same classrooms, learning alongside experienced educators and university faculty. This is the Blueprint for Literacy in action. Research, practice, and partnership - working together so every Kansas child gets the reading instruction they need.
