The final awards our office has given out this year is our Career Champions. This award is given to faculty or staff members that connect and collaborate with our office to further the career development of our students.
The staff members who received this award are Danny Funk and Nick McClung and the faculty member who received this award is Bob Beatty!
Danny works consistently with Career Engagement through the career fairs and the First Destination Survey. Each year Danny is one of the first organizations to register for the career fairs to recruit for the MBA and MAcc programs. Danny ensures that all of his students have taken the First Destination Survey which helps out our office when reporting Washburn’s data nationally and needing a certain percentage of student respondents. Danny is a strong collaborator with the CEO year after year.
Nick has supported the work of the Career Engagement Office in several ways over the past year including as a consistent volunteer at our annual career fairs. Throughout the year, Nick has referred many students to the Career Engagement Office as they explore various majors and careers. Nick worked with the Career Engagement staff to embed our information during the onboarding process for success coaches. Nick consistently supports the work of the CEO every year.
Dr. Bob Beatty's actively collaborates with Career Engagement staff by welcoming them into his classroom for presentations and career-focused programming, helping students make meaningful connections between their academic experiences and future professional opportunities. He thoughtfully integrates career development assignments into his curriculum. He has served as a willing and enthusiastic partner in piloting new career development initiatives, including integrating Big Interview with his students. Through intentional partnerships and innovative teaching practices, Dr. Beatty goes above and beyond to ensure students are equipped with the skills, resources, and confidence needed for post-graduate success.
Help us congratulate these three Career Champions!

Over the past two weeks our office has given out our two annual awards. The first award we gave out is our Commitment to Careers Award. This award recognizes student organizations, athletic teams, and campus departments who engage with our office to promote career readiness for our students. There is a plaque in the Career Engagement Office where these entities are recognized.
The Student Organization recognized for their Commitment to Careers is We Are F1rst!
- We Are F1rst has worked with the Career Engagement Office in several ways over the last school year. Through encouraging their members to participate in existing career events like the Simulated Career Fair (new in fall 2025) and larger career fairs and collaborating on a new event – FirstGen Coffee Talks. The FirstGen Coffee Talks event brought together first-gen professionals from the Topeka community to share information about their career path and offer guidance to current first-gen students at WU. This organization has gone above and beyond to show their commitment to the future careers of their members! Thank you, We Are F1rst!
The Campus Department recognized for their Commitment to Careers is the Aleshire Center for Leadership and Community Engagement.
- The Aleshire Center professional and student staff has collaborated with the Career Engagement Office in many ways over the past year. Their professional staff dedicate many volunteer hours to the all-majors career fairs every year. In the past year, their staff partnered with us to launch the first ever Bods Volunteer Fair. On top of that, our office has been invited to present career development topics in many of the Bonner, Community Engagement, and Leadership classes. For these reasons, the Aleshire Center for Leadership and Community Engagement is the departmental recipient of the Commitment to Careers award. Thank you, Aleshire Center!
