My 3 yo is working on reading and math. He learned his letter identification through play at the age of 2. He can write his name among other things. All was done learning through play and with 10-20 mins of our own play time after hours. I named my daycare after my daughter, now 11, and the term “Play School”. We learn through play. It’s a school where she learned and played. Now my youngest son is doing the same, along with other children. My eldest kids never went to a preschool and they flourished throughout school. Now graduated and in college!
Kids learn at their own pace but mainly through play! If you want your child learning things by a certain point, be a team player and help them learn with repetition at home! I sing the ABCs with my daughter twice at bedtime every single night and she learned it very quickly at the age of one, she’s now almost 21. Any time helps tremendously! Even just 5 mins! Do a puzzle for letter identification, shapes, colors, numbers … trust me, it works wonders!! Kids don’t need a fancy expensive education, they need a daycare provider and parent team!! no matter what age or grade they are in. They will always need their parent to be a teammate with their teacher!! Always! But keep in mind ….
Kids learn at different rates! If you feel your child is behind or want your child to reach certain milestones by a certain point; talk with your provider and come up with a plan and if your child is ready, but follow through on your end to help make it happen. It doesn’t take long with a team effort. But remember, just bc you want it, and your provider is on board, doesn’t always mean your child will be ready. If they’re not, give it a break and try again.
Kids minds are like sponges!! You can literally teach at any time! At the grocery store? When starting out, teaching at a atore or otherwise might look more like “Do you see the green cucumber? I have 2! This is a red apple!” Once they know their colors, numbers etc, (even if they dont know, ask and then tell them after a few secinds of thinking- theyll soon make the connection) Ask what things are, ask what color a container is, ask the shape of a package, ask how many you put in the cart, ask what letters they see, or the number on the price tag!! I’ve done this with all of my kids and its worked wonders!! The best part, shopping becomes fun, less of a chore, and your child had no idea theyre learning! You can literally do this anywhere!! You could do it at the park, “What color is that swing? Do you see the red slide?” You could do it at a car dealership what color is that car? How many red cars do you see?” You can do it at grandma‘s house, “Hey how many owls does grandma have?” Like I said, absolutely anywhere! All a parent needs to do is change their way of thinking about teaching. Once you can make that realization in your mind, it gets so much easier and everywhere becomes a learning environment!🥰
