Below is a linguistic note on Edith Wharton’s portrayal of Gilded Age society. Wharton, author of The Age of Innocence (1920), became the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (then called the Novel Prize).

During a performance of Faust, the opera inspired by the French play Faust et Marguerite, itself drawn from Goethe’s German tragic drama Faust, the narrator observes: "..she sang..M'ama and not he loves me, because an unalterable and unquestioned law of the musical world required that the German text of French operas sung by Swedish artists should be translated into Italian for the clearer understanding of English-speaking audiences."
