Holding the Line in Kansas:
Kimaura Part 1 of 2

Kimaura grew up in and was once placed on a church prayer list as a child for being gay. Today, at 23, she is beginning her transition while navigating fear in everyday life — from walking down the street to deciding which restroom feels safest.

Her story unfolds at a moment when Kansas has passed Senate Bill 244, a sweeping new law that requires people to use public restrooms based on their s*x assigned at birth and blocks residents from updating gender markers on state IDs and birth certificates. The law also invalidates many IDs that were previously updated and allows people to sue transgender individuals for up to $1,000 over restroom use.

For Kimaura, the impact is deeply personal. Like many trans people in Kansas, she worries that the law could prevent her from updating her documents or accessing the identification she would need to travel, move, or pursue gender-affirming care in the future.

This series shares the voices of trans people across the and navigating this moment.

    •    Camp Talent Show
    •    Final Night Grill Out & Social

Trans BIPOC communities are exceptionally creative and resilient. The talents and interests of our camp leadership team will help guide various aspects of Liberation Camp, along with the unique contributions of our attending campers.
All attendees will share or help lead in some capacity, which helps make this experience special.

We have (12) twelve spots to offer and will be prioritizing applications from younger trans women of color and trans femmes of color (18 and over) in the Midwest and Ozark regions. We also have interest in centering trans and nonbinary BIPOC leaders who are working directly with trans young people and/or trans women of color in our communities.

Our application process is now open and we will be accepting rolling submissions until Friday, September 9 at 11:59PM Central.  If you identify as a trans person of color (over 18 years old), join us October 12-16, 2022, in our safe, affirming, and healing campground in the Ozark Mountains.

This show is for all artists, musicians, and storytellers in the LGBTQ+ community to tell their stories and share their experiences with the world. What has your experience been? "LGBTQ+ individuals face various health disparities, such as the increased risk of drug use, poor mental health, homelessness, obesity, and cardiovascular problems, among many others. Recent literature relates these risk factors to the minority stress theory or the idea that marginalized communities exist at high levels of chronic stress leading to unhealthy coping mechanisms and risks of poor health. Our study hopes to assess factors in the coming out process that may increase or decrease stress, such as familial support through Photovoice.

Photovoice is a form of community-based research that gives a voice to often unheard voices. It allows participants to control the narrative of the study. Participants would take photos of their day-to-day life and journal about the significance of these photos relating to coming out. They would then attend a semi-guided interview where further discussion regarding these photos would take place. Common themes in photos, journals, and interviews across all participants would be determined. These themes would all relate to aspects that either increase or decrease stress in the coming out process."
