Abusers are so wily and manipulative. There are infinite ways that they can tear down their partner. It is often so difficult to put your finger on exactly what is happening. For me, I kept trying to fix ME to make him happy. That was a losing battle. The more I did, the worse I was treated.

When people are in battle mode, the hardest thing to realize is that the dragons we are fighting (on the outside) are also *within* us. This is a key insight of Taoism and Zen, expressed in modern times by Nietzsche, Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell as the wounded dragon, shadow or monster that must be healed, understood, transformed and/or tamed (rather than destroyed) in order for peace to arise..

"The real dragon is in you. That’s your ego, holding you in. What I want, what I believe, what I can do, what I think I love, and all that. What I regard as the aim of my life and so forth. It might be too small. It might be that which pins you down. And if it’s simply that of doing what the environment tells you to do, it certainly is pinning you down. And so the environment is your dragon, as it reflects within yourself. How do you [slay the dragon within yourself]? My general formula for my students is, follow your bliss, I mean, find where it is, and don’t be afraid to follow it." ~Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth (1988)

"The most dangerous psychological mistake is the projection of the shadow on to others; this is the root of almost all conflicts. Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely. " ~Carl Jung

“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.” ―Friedrich W. Nietzsche
