How many folks do you know have some sort of trouble they can't seem to get their arms around? That trouble can become all consuming and then it gets even harder to sort through. Do you know how I know that? I have been there.

How many people do you know complain about their boss? Be fair -- are the complaints well founded? Take a few minutes to consider both sides, look seriously at the whole picture. Are the complaints justified?

The symptoms for fibromyalgia can vary from person to person and reaction to treatment will vary from person to person. The type of treatment required can even vary from person to person. For example everyone needs Vitamin D. Some might be able to absorb it from the sun. Others need to supplement their diet to have adequate levels of Vitamin D. People with fibromyalgia are often low in vitamin D, but not all of us . Your doctor can do a blood test to determine if vitamin D is an issue. Magnesium and malate are commonly supplements that some folks with fibromyalgia will need. You may have seen/tried those little bottles of energy drinks that sometimes are available near the checkouts at many convenience stores -- they give you energy because they have high doses of B12 and other B Vitamins (and of course, lots of caffeine). Those drinks are really strong stuff and should be used with caution, but you can get B vitamins in a supplement without the caffeine and some of the supplements have added other proven herbal extracts and specific nutrients to help folks with fibromyalgia.

Did you know that there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a person? You can't put your finger on it, but it is there. Just like there are no exact answers to what causes fibromyalgia. There are several factors considered to be possible causes: stress, injury, certain auto-immune diseases, certain types of infection and heredity/genetics. (Personally, I'm sure my triggers were first stress and then injury.) You may have heard the commercials on television for a prescription drug that helps fibromyalgia by calming overactive nerves. What that is getting at is people with fibromyalgia may have changes in their central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves) that causes nerves to have a more intense response to pain -- and sometimes light and sound, too.

Rumors never help treatment. Contrary to what you may have heard, fibromyalgia is not just a 'women's disease.' Personally, I suspect that women were first and most persistent in reporting the difficulties associated with the symptoms and that is how it got that mythical label. Neither is fibromyalgia something that is 'all in your head' -- it is very real -- the pain, the sleep issues, stiffness, fatigue, memory issues and even such complications as depression, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, tinnitus and gastrointestinal reflux disease occurs as part of fibromyalgia in men and women. Yes, more women than men are reported, but the disorder covers the gamut -- even kids. Everything about fibromyalgia is a little fuzzy just like this sunset through a very smokey evening sky.

Fibromyalgia symptoms have been described for centuries and written about by medical professionals since the early 1800s, but science/researchers didn't categorize it until 1981. It actually got its current name in 1976. This all sounds relatively recent, but it has been around for a very long time. Whatever it is in our environment (physical or social) that may be causative is obviously growing and increasing the incidence and/or the diagnosis of this disorder. In the photo you can see the sun through a strong layer of wildfire smoke. Is it possible that air pollution can add to our ability to process our environment?

Fibromyalgia is reaching epidemic proportions across the globe. It doesn't care what s*x you are (though 70 to 80 percent are women). It doesn't care how old you are (though often diagnosed after 40). It doesn't care what country you live in or what your cultural or ethnic background is. The symptoms of fibromyalgia strike anywhere and everywhere.

But also know it is not rare -- it is reported that there are between 5 and 10 million cases in the U.S. alone (different authorities report different numbers). World wide it is thought that between 2% and 4% of the population suffers from fibromyalgia. This is big and getting bigger.....

You can be merrily going along with fibromyalgia (FM) moving from joint to joint but quite bearable to a full-blown FM exacerbation because of a completely independent physical trauma event. Perhaps it is the stress of the trauma that causes the brain to react differently. Perhaps the trauma changed the chemical balance somehow. But it has been shown time and again that an injury can make your FM worse. The same thing applies to an illness. It can be the trigger for FM. Sometimes it is only after an illness or some sort of trauma event that FM becomes noticeable. It may have been there before, but not strong enough to worry about the symptoms. This book by Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum has so much helpful information that it should be required reading for anyone with FM. You can find it at www.fibromyalgiaandyou.com for $3.99 via Amazon.

If you have fibromyalgia (FM) you probably already know there is no "silver bullet" cure for the symptoms. You have to deal with the pain one way; you have to deal with the weakness and fatigue another way; you have to deal with the sleep issues in yet another way. The folks that label such things don't want to call FM a disease. It is generally known as a syndrome -- a collection of symptoms that consistently occur together. Some thoughts to ponder: somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000,000 Americans suffer from these symptoms -- roughly 8,000,000 of these suffers are women. And it isn't just an American condition -- it can be found world wide in 3 - 6% of the population, including all age categories. Why don't we know more about it and what causes it and better ways to treat it? And if that treatment meant more prescription drugs, would I even take them? There were whispers a few years back that there might be some sort of connection to certain kinds of vaccines we all received as kids. And are the numbers of this condition growing or being better reported or increasing because of school requirement to get vaccines? I can't find enough unbiased research to answer my questions.

One of the 'alternative therapies' that has shown itself to be helpful for the pains of fibromyalgia is massage. How long has it been since you have allowed yourself the luxury of a massage by a licensed masseuse who will know how to address many of your primary pain points? Possibly too long. It might be time to treat yourself. However, if you don't have access to a masseuse, there are a number of products that might be able to help relax the muscles and/or target your trigger points or tender points as they call them now. And those trigger points are often very important in someone with fibromyalgia - their existence is even part of the diagnostic process for fibromyalgia. There is a tool called a Body Back Buddy Trigger Point Therapy Self Massage Tool that might bear investigating. If you are curious you can find it on my Fibromyalgia and You page at 'https://fibromyalgiaandyou.com/.'
