I submitted my application to Local 9 at the start of 2026. Following a series of tests and interviews, only 35 individuals were accepted from a pool of over 500 applicants. It took roughly a month before I received my work assignment. Currently, 1 am responsible for all the piping at a data center.

My instructor, Mr. Keefe, was instrumental in guiding me through the application process. The Youth Transition to Work (YTTW) Program also played a crucial role in preparing me for this journey. Without OCVTS, I wouldn't be where I am today. The instructors and staff want you to succeed, but you must be willing to listen.

Make sure you know how to read a tape measure, learn how to prep material very well, and don't act like you know everything. You need to be teachable, confident, and excited to learn.

OCVTS EMT Students Explore Emergency Response with Ocean County Sheriff’s Department! 🚑

On September 17, 2026, students in the OCVTS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program had the opportunity to tour the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department’s Mobile Command Center!

During the visit, students explored the vehicle and gained valuable insight into the various operations and coordinated efforts that take place at an emergency scene. The experience provided a firsthand look at how multiple agencies work together to support effective emergency response and incident management.

As part of their EMT training, students develop essential skills in patient assessment, medical and trauma emergencies, critical thinking, professional communication, and teamwork. They also receive training in the Incident Command System (ICS), which prepares them to understand how emergency response agencies coordinate during incidents and disasters.

Experiences like this help connect classroom instruction with real-world emergency response, preparing our students for the challenges and responsibilities of a career in emergency medical services.

ℹ️ Program Information
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)
1 YEAR / 450 HOURS / WARETOWN
This course prepares students with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to provide emergency medical care as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Through classroom instruction, lab simulations, and field experiences, students learn to assess patients, manage medical and trauma emergencies, perform CPR, and use life-saving equipment such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and airway management devices. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, critical thinking, and professional communication in emergency situations. Students who successfully complete the course meet the training requirements to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination and qualify for New Jersey EMT certification. Students will also get training in The Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 300, and 400 which are standardized training courses developed by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). They are designed to prepare individuals and organizations for effective response to emergencies and disasters of all sizes.

MATES is a specialized high school developed around the marine and environmental science theme. MATES is geared toward students who wish to concentrate their studies in the areas of math and science.

The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), Ocean County’s premier STEAM school, has been designed to provide its students with a rigorous academic curriculum with concentration in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. MATES provides a unique and challenging hands-on learning experience in an enriched STEAM learning environment. Extensive field work, independent research, work-based learning experiences, and STEAM-based partnerships offer students opportunities to explore numerous career fields. Nearly 100% of the Class of 2026 are attending top colleges and universities around the country. ALPS students will have the opportunity to graduate with an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Ocean County College, beginning with the graduating class of 2029.

The Academy of Law & Public Safety (ALPS) is designed to provide a unique and comprehensive foundation of knowledge, skills, and professional ethics for Ocean County students interested in pursuing careers in law and public safety. The academy offers a rigorous educational program while integrating the latest technology related to criminal justice. Students enrolled at ALPS have the opportunity to enroll in Ocean County College embedded classes for dual credit, opening up the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree in addition to their high school diploma. ALPS graduates have been accepted to and attended many prestigious colleges and universities, pursuing degrees in criminal justice, forensic science, biology, cybersecurity, and a variety of other fields. Graduates can earn credentials to include Emergency Medical Dispatch, Basic Telecommunicator, CPR, and Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I Certification. ALPS graduates have also been hired by, or are currently employed by, more than 30 New Jersey police departments, the New Jersey Department of Corrections, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office. Many ALPS graduates have also gone on to serve in the U.S. military.

FEATURED MAJOR: AUDIO ENGINEERING🔊🎛️

The Grunin Performing Arts Academy (GPAA) offers an artistically distinctive and academically sound learning setting for students gifted in the performing arts and the technical aspects of art production. The academy offers its students curriculum that is specially designed with a concentration in dance, vocal music, theatre and audio engineering, while providing a rigorous academic program of study.

Upon graduation, 85% of the Class of 2026 also earned their associate’s degree.

AUDIO ENGINEERING MAJOR🔊🎛️
This program combines both art and science in a field that requires specialized technical knowledge. Students will be guided through the process of capturing sound (audio) and storing it in both the digital and analog mediums for reproduction. Students will learn recording technology through classroom instruction and application of these techniques using professional recording equipment at the school’s multiple studio recording facility. The program will be taught by professionals from the recording industry through real recording sessions with artists from many musical genres including commercials and voice over production. Curriculum content will cover the following: multimedia production, physics of sound, acoustics, multi-track recording/digital audio technology, Pro Tools-Digital Audio Workstations and musical instrument technology, design and application of microphones, computer digital editing and mastering, the audio production console, signal processors, audio for visual production and post production, the music business and sound reinforcement (concert sound).
