CTL is an innovative PK-10 private school with plans to expand through 12th grade. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides an intimate, personalized environment tailored to each student’s needs.

We group students in multi-age classrooms and limit class sizes to twenty, allowing teachers to build stronger relationships with individual students and differentiate instruction accordingly. We use paper-and-pencil tests less frequently than traditional schools, instead relying on alternative forms of assessment such as projects and portfolios that paint a more complete picture of each student’s abilities and needs. We encourage community and parent involvement to develop children’s understandings of the connections between classroom and real-world experiences and invite parents to be partners in the education of their children. We establish an environment that encourages independent thought, expression, and creativity. Students are given ample time to grapple, conjecture, follow their passions, ask questions, and find answers with the guidance of dedicated, highly-qualified teachers. We believe that all children thrive in an environment that acts as a catalyst for their natural curiosity and encourages them to develop, share, and feel proud of their individual abilities. CTL is a school of inquiry that encourages and nurtures children’s innate curiosities. The instructional approaches will attend to the varied learning styles of modern children. We will provide opportunities necessary for learners to be challenged in meaningful ways, to be truly engaged in critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity through project-based learning. Children who attend CTL are guided by expert teachers. The definition of an “expert” teacher can be complex and multilayered (Berliner, 2001). We believe that expert teachers are also committed learners. Our expert teachers will: • hold college degrees and certifications specific to their teaching assignments; • engage in ongoing professional development to hone their craft; • read professional journal articles and books; and • share their teaching experiences through publishing journal articles and books, presenting at conferences, and mentoring teachers who intern at CTL. Our dedicated faculty builds a relevant curriculum based on the diverse needs and interests of each student rather than deliver a pre-packaged program. Because of our small-school atmosphere, CTL faculty is better able to align the curriculum on a continuum through the grades. Furthermore, because of our small-class size, teachers are better able to differentiate for each student.

Mission: CTL is designed to recognize and respect the uniqueness of each child. The school's primary mission is to foster a love of learning through teaching students to follow their curiosity, to think creatively, and to work both independently and cooperatively with others.

Operating as usual

Today at our Veterans Day celebration in morning meeting, we honored those who currently serve or who have served in the armed forces. We enjoyed hearing the songs from the different branches of the United States Armed Forces and heard from one of our veteran dads, Mr. Eric Lugger. Students also wrote letters that will be mailed to veterans who are currently serving. Thank you to the veterans who protect our country! And thanks to teachers and students for making this a special day by showing respect for our veterans and our country.

THE VOTE IS IN....The winner of CTL's Pre-K-K election yesterday is... Oreo cookies. Oreo received 32 votes and chocolate chip cookies received 24. Thanks Mrs. Billings and Mrs. Brown for teaching the little ones about the voting process.

"On a nice fall day the mom told a little boy to go find a little red house with no doors or windows but had a star on the inside. During his search he asked all the animals if they had seen the little red house. They said, "No." Until he got to the cat who was up in the apple tree. She knew exactly what the little boy was looking for… and threw an apple down to the boy." This story was reenacted by Mrs. Billings with her Pre-K students last week followed by the making of homemade applesauce--an experience the children will always remember, and so will we. We love this time of year when Mrs. Billings makes her applesauce, and the building smells of apples and cinnamon and fall.

Ms. Mayo helps her CTL students develop creative problem-solving skills through art, and CTL students LOVE art class. Thank you Ms. Mayo.
