The cranberry vines we planted a few weeks ago are getting their first application of fertilizer! We wait until the vines have developed a strong root system so they can efficiently take up the nutrients.

Our fertilizer bridge spans more than 200 feet and travels at around 8 miles per hour!

A less common way to propagate cranberry vines is by plating plugs, or rooted stolons. These are purchased from a greenhouse with a well-established root system already in place.

Nine people ride on a planter pulled by a tractor, dropping the plugs into a small trench every 12 inches.

Once cranberry vines are established, they’ll produce for decades, so we don’t have to plant new beds very often. That’s a good thing because it takes three to four years before a newly planted bed produces a decent crop of cranberries.

Planting season on the cranberry marsh!

Here’s how cranberry vines are traditionally planted. They’re mowed from an existing bed, spread across a fresh layer of sand, and then poked into the ground using a series of discs.

Habelman Bros put in a number of pollinator gardens to support our bees and other beneficials. Pollinators are important workers on our marshes as they pollinate all of those beautiful pink blossoms, ensuring a bountiful harvest.
