🧠 ABA 101 — Part 6: What Is Prompting?

Have you ever wondered how we help a child learn a new skill without simply doing it for them?

One strategy ABA uses is called prompting.

👉 A prompt is a little bit of extra help given to encourage someone to respond or complete a skill correctly.

Think about learning something new. Sometimes we need a hint, a reminder, a demonstration, or a little guidance before we can do something independently.

That’s the idea behind prompting in ABA.

💡 What can a prompt look like?

Prompts can take different forms depending on the skill and the individual:

👀 Visual prompt: Showing a picture, visual schedule, or example.

🗣️ Verbal prompt: Giving a reminder or instruction, such as “Say help.”

👋 Gesture prompt: Pointing toward an item or indicating what to do.

👩‍🏫 Model prompt: Demonstrating the action so the person can see what to do.

The goal isn't to keep prompting forever.

🌱 The goal is independence.

When a child is learning a new skill, they may need more support at first. As they become more successful, prompts can gradually be reduced or faded so the child can complete the skill independently.

For example:

➡️ A child is learning to put their shoes on.
➡️ At first, they may need a reminder or demonstration.
➡️ With practice, less help is needed.
➡️ Eventually, they may put their shoes on independently.

That independence is the goal. 💙

At Bright Connections, prompting is individualized based on the skill being taught, the learner, and what type of support will be most helpful. We want to provide enough support to create opportunities for success while also working toward greater independence.

Because sometimes learning doesn't mean “I can do it right away.”

Sometimes it means:

“I needed a little help… and now I can do it myself.” 🌟

🧠 ABA 101 — Part 5: What Is Reinforcement?

You’ve probably heard the word “reinforcement” before, but what does it actually mean in ABA?

One common misconception is that reinforcement simply means giving a child a reward for doing something. In ABA, reinforcement is much more specific.

👉 Reinforcement is a consequence that follows a behavior and increases the likelihood that behavior will happen again in the future.

Think of it like this:

Behavior → What happens afterward → What the person learns

For example:

🗣️ A child says, “Help please.”
➡️ An adult provides help.
➡️ The child learns that communicating their need for help is effective.

Over time, the child may be more likely to use that communication again.

💡 Reinforcement looks different for everyone.

What is meaningful or motivating for one person may not be meaningful for another.

Reinforcement might include:

⭐ Positive attention or praise
🧩 Access to a favorite activity
🫧 Bubbles or a preferred toy
📚 Choosing a favorite book
🎵 Listening to preferred music
🛝 Getting access to a preferred activity
🧘 Having an appropriate break

And reinforcement isn't always something tangible. Attention, access, choices, activities, and other meaningful experiences can all play a role.

But isn't that just bribery?

No. Reinforcement is a teaching strategy used to help strengthen skills and behaviors that are meaningful to the individual.

For example, teaching a child to appropriately communicate “break please” and then honoring that communication can help them learn an effective way to communicate their needs.

At Bright Connections, reinforcement is one of many tools we use to support communication, independence, learning, participation, and meaningful skill development.

The goal isn't simply:

❌ “How do we get a child to do what we want?”

Instead, we're asking:

✅ “How can we help this child learn a skill that is meaningful and useful in their everyday life?”

Because when we understand what motivates learning, we can create better opportunities for children to practice, succeed, and build skills.

✨ That’s reinforcement in action.

🧠 ABA 101 — Part 4: Why Does ABA Use Data?

Ever wondered why data collection is such a big part of ABA?

It’s not just about writing down numbers. Data helps us understand what’s happening, measure progress, and make informed decisions about treatment.

📊 So, what can data tell us?

➡️ Is a skill improving?
If a child is working on communicating, completing a task, or following a routine, data can help show whether that skill is increasing over time.

➡️ Is a behavior happening less often?
Data can help us look at changes in the frequency, duration, or other measurable aspects of a behavior.

➡️ Is a strategy working?
Data gives the clinical team information about whether changes are occurring and whether an approach may need to be adjusted.

➡️ What should we work on next?
Data can help identify areas where a child may need more support, practice, or a different teaching approach.

But here's the important part:

Data doesn't define the child.

A number is just one piece of information. ABA teams look at data alongside observations, clinical judgment, caregiver input, and the individual's goals and needs.

The purpose isn't to chase numbers.

The purpose is to understand progress and make sure we're providing meaningful, individualized support.

That's why you'll often see data sheets, graphs, and progress tracking as part of ABA services. 📈

Because when we measure what matters, we can make better-informed decisions about how to support meaningful progress.
