I’ve been a book lover for as long as I can remember—and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. ❤️

Books teach us. They challenge us. They comfort us. They take us places we’ve never been and help us see the world through someone else’s eyes.

As a teacher, reading specialist, and lifelong learner, one thing I will ALWAYS advocate for is keeping our kids reading, thinking, imagining, questioning, and creating. 📖✨

So today, August 9th, pick up a book. Visit a bookstore. Read to a child. Revisit an old favorite. Build that TBR pile a little higher. 😉

Because readers are thinkers—and we need them more than ever.

📚 Book Therapy.

When the headlines started making me feel discouraged, I did what I’ve always done… I went to a bookstore.

This time, I found some incredible treasures at Book Off in Costa Mesa. New books. Used books. Vintage books. Antique books. Every book has a story worth preserving.

If you love books, go support your local bookstores. Buy one. Borrow one. Share one. Read one. The more we value books, the more we protect the creativity, critical thinking, and imagination they inspire.

This is just the beginning of my Book Therapy series, where I’ll be sharing my favorite finds and giving these books the love and attention they deserve.

This week’s AI headlines should be a wake-up call for every parent, teacher, and educator.

We’re reading reports that AI companies are purchasing books, scanning them, and in some cases destroying the physical copies after digitizing them to train AI systems. Whether you see that as progress or deeply unsettling, it forces us to ask an important question:

What happens if we stop valuing books themselves?

Books are more than information. They teach our children to think critically, analyze, synthesize ideas, question assumptions, imagine possibilities, and create something entirely new. Those human skills cannot be outsourced.

As parents and educators, we have a responsibility to protect the next generation’s ability to read deeply, think independently, and create boldly. AI should amplify human intelligence—not replace the habits that build it.

This isn’t about rejecting AI. It’s about making sure we don’t sacrifice reading, creativity, and independent thought in the process.

What kind of future are we building if we stop protecting the very thing that teaches us how to think?

📦 What’s on my desk? One of my favorite reading tools!

Today one of my students is unboxing the phonics word builder I use with nearly every reading student. This hands-on, multisensory tool makes phonics come alive by helping students build, manipulate, and decode words—exactly the way the brain learns to read.

It’s one of my go-to resources for Orton-Gillingham-inspired, structured literacy instruction, and it’s always within reach during my lessons.

Summer is a great time to relax—but don’t let your child’s reading progress slip away.

Here are 3 simple ways to keep reading skills strong:

📚 1. Practice sight words for just 5–10 minutes a day. Building automatic word recognition improves reading fluency and confidence.

🎲 2. Make learning fun with games. Choose games that encourage reading, language, vocabulary, and critical thinking.

📖 3. Read books at your child’s instructional level. Spend 15–20 minutes reading together each day. Success with “just right” books helps build comprehension and a lifelong love of reading.

Small, consistent practice over the summer can make a big difference when school starts again.
