What a day!
Today our 2ndβ6th grade students headed to Rogers High School for the Run, Jump, Throw field events, and the energy was incredible from the moment they marched in to the Olympic theme song! Students were excited to hear from Rogers alumni and Olympic medalist Erik Kynard, who welcomed and inspired the crowd before the events began.
Throughout the day, students tested their skills in javelin throwing, track races, jump rope activities, and many other fun events. There were lots of smiles, cheering, teamwork, and school spirit all around!
To make the day even more memorable, students also received awesome swag including a bag, water bottle, and medal to take home. A gold-medal kind of day for our students! π₯

Today was the GLOBE Student Research Symposium at the The Toledo Zoo, and what an incredible day it was for Hawkins STEAM Academy!
Our students have been working on their research projects all year long, and today they had the opportunity to proudly share their findings with scientists and peers from other schools.
Needless to say, they impressed everyone in the room! One scientist told our first grade group that they almost brought her to tears because they were so inspiring, knowledgeable, and already demonstrating true scientific thinking, inquiry, and communication skills. What an amazing compliment for our young scientists!
Our students were eager to explain their research, answer questions, and share their discoveries with anyone who stopped by. Their curiosity, confidence, and perseverance were on full display all day long.
We also had time to celebrate all of their hard work by exploring the zoo together. The giraffes were especially happy to see us⦠and even happier to eat the lettuce!
This group of young scientists is going to change the world one day. Honestly, they already are. π¦π¬π

Prairie Panic Alert! ππ±π±
Yesterday our friends from the The Toledo Zoo came out to do some targeted mowing in the Hawkins STEAM prairie. A few students were VERY concerned at first:
βWaitβ¦ why are they cutting down our prairie?!β ππΎ
Good news, prairie friends, there is no need to worry! This special mowing helps reduce turf grass that tries to sneak into the prairie and take over. Our native prairie plants will come back bigger, healthier, and fuller in just a few short weeks. Nature is pretty amazing like that. π
Since the prairie was cleared a bit, students also took the opportunity to plant more bare root swamp milkweed to continue supporting monarch butterflies and other pollinators. π¦
Our prairie is one of our favorite learning spaces on campus, and we are always working to improve and care for it. Sometimes helping nature grow means getting a little messy first! π±β¨
