For many people, the word “stalking” conjures images of binoculars or cameras. While surveillance is often a part of a stalking case, it’s only one of many possible stalking behaviors. Many stalkers use multiple tactics to watch, contact, threaten, sabotage, and otherwise terrify their victims. Learn more about the full scope of stalking tactics using the SLII framework: surveillance, life invasion, intimidation, and interference (through sabotage or attack).

Though the word “stalking” is often misused in casual conversations, it is a unique victimization with a particular meaning. Stalkers choose specific targets and engage in a pattern of behavior (also called a “course of conduct”) designed to cause fear or substantial emotional distress. Learn more about what stalking is – and is not – by completing SPARC’s short eLearning module “What is Stalking?”

Since 1984, Bethany House has served more than 2,000 individuals and provided more than 300,000 nights of shelter for victims and their children escaping domestic abuse. Most shelters offer short-term stays in dorm housing, but Bethany House is the only Toledo-area domestic violence shelter that offers long-term, apartment-style transitional living. Many survivors are with them for over a year.
