This morning our K–8 students heard the parable of the sower. Jesus tells about a farmer scattering seed. The seed represents God's Word.

Some lands on a hard path and never sinks in. Sometimes that looks like ignorance: we never really listen to God's Word, or never pay attention long enough to find out what it means.

Some springs up quickly on rocky ground, then withers when faith begins to cost something. That can be embarrassment: we believe it, but we don't want others to know that about us.

Some gets choked out by thorns: homework, practices, screens, work, worry, the simple busyness of life. We intend to connect with God's Word, but somehow everything else takes our bandwidth.

These aren't childhood problems. We all know what it is to resist God’s Word, to feel embarrassed by it, to lose it in distraction, or to let something else crowd it out.

Here’s the good news: God keeps giving His life-giving Word, and through that Word He grows faith in us. He is not waiting for us to get it all right. He keeps giving Christ, forgiveness, peace, and life to people who need them.

Even (especially!) if it has been a while, come and hear the good news with us.

“Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise.”
Martin Luther, Luther’s Works 53:323

Music is beautiful. St. Paul writes, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly... singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” (Colossians 3:16)

Music has a remarkable way of letting the Word of Christ dwell in us. Words wrapped in melody stick with us. Hymns learned as children can still be on our lips decades later. Through music, the words of Scripture and the truths of our faith find a home in our memories, ready to be recalled when we need them.

Garrett Anderson is Trinity’s Director of Parish Music, and God blesses our church and school through the music he shares. Among other things, he teaches our children, rehearses musicians, plans for worship, plays, directs groups, and leads the songs of our church and school.

There’s a place for you in the music at Trinity.

Love to sing? Come to choir.
Want to try handbells? Come ring with us.

Simply come and make some music.

This is how we began the first day of school: together in God's house.

In chapel this morning, Pastor Love reminded our students that being ROOTED IN CHRIST isn't first about what we accomplish. A healthy plant bears fruit because its roots are receiving what it needs. Christ gives to us first: His mercy, forgiveness, love and peace, and from His gifts comes a life of faith, kindness, patience and service to others.

“As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith.” —Colossians 2:6–7

There will be plenty of learning in the months ahead. Today we were reminded of the One in whom all that learning and growing is rooted.

Thank God for a new school year!

Today, these hallways are quiet.

Tomorrow, over 150 families will send their children through Trinity’s doors for the first day of school. Some students are just beginning their years of education. Others are beginning their final year in these classrooms. All of them will learn, grow, struggle, laugh, make friends, and more while they hear again and again day after day of Jesus' love for them.

As another school year begins, will you pray for them?

Pray for our students, their families, teachers and staff, and all who are connected to Trinity. Above all, pray that, through time at Trinity, all would come to know more fully the love God has for them in Christ Jesus, the Savior who died and rose for them.

Our theme for this year is "ROOTED IN CHRIST" based on Colossians 2:6–7:

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.”

Tomorrow the hallways fill up. Let's pray together that all those who walk them will be rooted and built up in Christ!
