Yesterday, transformative feminist, political activist, and journalist Gloria Steinem passed away at the age of 92.

A Toledo-born native, Gloria trailblazed the second-wave feminist movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s, utilizing her journalism to expose the underbelly of hushed sexism in the workplace, rally for legal protections of women’s education, and question the societal tilt towards masculine opinion.

In 2024, 13-year-old Karmen Wilson crafted her own chair through our Girls Hub program dedicated to Gloria Steinem and her legacy, featuring a cover from her co-founded Ms. Magazine. The glass backing serves as a remembrance of the icon’s Glass City roots, adorned with Wonder Woman colors that celebrate strength and progress. The back of the chair features a quote from Gloria: “Women may be the one group that grew more radical with age.” A mirror sits at the front, reminding whoever looks into it that “this is what a leader looks like.” We’re grateful to house such a celebratory piece of Gloria Steinem’s impact and legacy.

Gloria’s verified Instagram account notes that she passed “surrounded by some of the many who loved her,” in her New York City home.

“Gloria’s near-century on earth was years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end,” the post states.

To honor Gloria Steinem’s journey, we invite you to explore the Steinem Sisters Collection at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library ( ToledoLucasCountyPublicLibrary ). This expansive collection features Gloria’s work and a variety of feminist pieces that explore the political, historical, and cultural nuances of women as a whole; it’s also located right here in Gloria’s hometown.

To learn more about how you can support Gloria’s legacy, please visit Gloria’s Foundation ( Gloria’s Foundation ).

Rest in power, Gloria Steinem.

📢 Our Women’s Equality Day program, “Celebrating the Power of the Woman,” is only 5 DAYS away; and we’re thrilled to welcome two people-led pioneers to rally our evening.

Our moderator of the evening is Dr. Angie Fitzpatrick, the Leadership & Workplace Culture Strategist of Angie Fitzpatrick Consulting, LLC!

Dr. Fitzpatrick brings nearly two decades of expertise across higher education, nonprofits, and consulting to help leaders build healthier, more effective workplaces. As the Founder of Angie Fitzpatrick Consulting and Executive Director of the MultiFaith Council of Northwest Ohio, she specializes in workplace dynamics, gender equity advocacy, and empowering women to own their strengths, use their voices, and lead with confidence.

And facilitating alongside her is Malaika Bell the founder and Lead Facilitator of Mosaic Strategic Solutions, LLC!

Malaika is dedicated to helping organizations and groups cultivate deeply connected, thriving communities. With a rich background in higher education and diversity leadership, she brings a dynamic, intuitive approach to culture transformation. By blending evidence-based strategies with ancestral practices, Malaika creates transformative spaces that foster authentic belonging and inspire lasting growth.

And that completes our 8th Annual Women’s Equality Day panel! 💫

We’ve introduced you to Dr. Fitzpatrick and Malaika. Now we want an introduction from you!

This Wednesday, we’re moving beyond discussion and into a platform to elevate our experiences, articulate what we demand, and stand united for what we fight for every day. Your perspective and your voice belong in this conversation.

Celebrate the Power of the Woman with us on Wednesday, August 26th at The Mez. Join the conversation over appetizers, access local resources, and help shape the fight for gender equity in the Greater Toledo area and beyond.

Meet the last (but certainly not least!) of our three panelists, Dr. Suzette Cowell, founder, president, CEO and treasurer of Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union!

With over five decades in financial services, Dr. Cowell grew TUFCU into a multi million dollar institution celebrating 30 years of advancing economic inclusion and wealth building across Northwest Ohio. Beyond guiding major local revitalization projects, such as the historic Dorr Street corridor and the long running African American Festival, she advises nationally on the Federal Reserve Advisory Council. Honored with the Key to the City of Toledo and an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service from the University of Toledo, Dr. Cowell delivers expansive insights about the professional sphere of Toledo and beyond.

As our 8th annual Women’s Equality Day celebration dawns past the weekend, local leaders such Dr. Cowell demonstrate an intricate connection between the community and the economic forces shaping our every day. Join Dr. Cowell and fellow speakers for an open dialogue exploring the personal, professional, and political challenges impacting local women, and learn how we can collectively harness our voices to demand progress and drive lasting equality.

We’ve introduced you to Dr. Cowell. Now we want an introduction from you!

Meet one of our three panelists, Ashley Bush, MSW, LISW-S, PMH-C, owner of Bloom Women’s Counseling, Consulting, and Wellness, LLC!

Dedicated to supporting women through therapeutic means, Ashley holds a Master’s in Social Work, independent Ohio licensure, and certification in perinatal mental health. Beyond her clinical work, Ashley has been mentoring and supervising professionals since 2012, helping the next generation of leaders grow. With over a decade of therapeutic work and advocacy experience, she brings a vital perspective on personal wellness and growth to this year’s celebration.

Ashley and local leaders serve as liaisons into the greater picture of Toledo, shining light on how societal and federal aspects affecting women shadows over our community. Next Wednesday for our 8th Annual Women’s Equality Day event, we’re diving into the personal, professional, and political challenges facing Toledo women, and exploring how our combined voices can drive momentum, action, and equity.

Meet one of our three panelists, Councilwoman Dr. Brittany Jones!

Dr. Jones is a Toledo native, scholar-activist, mother, and self-dubbed “community baby” dedicated to a lifelong engagement in public service. From her background as Senior Director at United Way of Greater Toledo to her leadership on City Council, where she chairs the Community Development, Housing, and Public Health Committee, Dr. Jones bridges policy and grassroots action to advance equity and food system resilience across Lucas County.

As we celebrate our 8th annual Women’s Equality Day next Wednesday, Dr. Jones and other local leaders will serve as direct sources to exchange dialogue and better understand the personal, professional, and political impact that affects women across Toledo; and even more, how we can use our voices to express what we want, what we demand, and what we fight for.

That’s a wrap on Girls Hub 2026! 🛠️🎉

We welcomed over 40 builders into our workshop, each infusing their own creativity into their work and building new connections. We commended everyone’s hard work with retreat days full of celebration and fun, including our retreat at the Cannaley Treehouse Village, a Mud Hens game, and more!

This experience has facilitated growth, empowerment, and kindness which will carry on long after the heat dies down. We are so proud of each builder and their time here.

A big thank you to all of our builders, their families, our volunteers and the community for uplifting Girls Hub; your support, compassion, and inspiration turned this into an unforgettable journey for all ❤️
