Sondheim at Village
'Putting It Together,' a r***e of Stephen Sondheim's music, opens Friday at the Village Players Theatre.
The Village Players closes their 60th season with Putting It Together, a musical r***e with words and music by Stephen Sondheim.
Nearly 30 songs from some of Sondheim’s greatest theater works and other media are used to tell a new story; some songs are taken out of the context of their original shows to tell what is happening here in the relationships, happy and unhappy, of the people at a cocktail party.
Laura Crawford, the Village Players’ director, recalls seeing a 1999 revival of Putting It Together starring Carol Burnett on TV and “being fascinated by all the different styles [of music] in it.” It’s a good vehicle for performers, she added, because it’s challenging, not only in the singing, but in taking the songs in a new direction from their original shows. The Village cast features Evan James Copeland, Hilary Largent, Jesse Mason-Brown, Lena Miller, and Matthew Johnston.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Village Players Theatre, 2740 Upton Ave. Additional shows are at 8 p.m. May 18, 19, and 20, and at 2 p.m. May 21. Tickets, $20 general admission, $18 for seniors and students, are available from 419-472-6817 and www.villageplayers.org
