People with disabilities have the same voting rights as all Americans. If you're nervous or confused about voting you can

1. Take someone with you. You're allowed to have a support person.

2. Ask a poll worker for assistance.

3. Print out a sample ballot at home and decide how you're going to vote ahead of time. Take it with you to the polling place, and fill in your ballot just like the one you did at home.

4. Don't want to go to vote in person? You can get an absentee ballot and vote from home.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY: It's more than you think

There are six special educational factors on page 2 of every IEP. The team must consider any item that is checked yes.

#5 on the list is assistive technology. If your student is using ANY assistive tech, make sure that box is checked yes! You don't want the next IEP team to exclude assistive tech support.

Not sure what counts? Are you thinking of a word board, adaptive seating, a voice amplification system? While those are all assistive tech, here are some others to consider:

Speech to text software
Text to speech software
Closed Caption software
Audiobook access or subscription
Enlarged font materials
Slantboards
Pencil grips

IDEA defines assistive tech as:
Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether
acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device. (IDEA Section 300.5)
