One of the biggest misconceptions in education right now:
“Student-centered learning” does not automatically create learner agency.
I visit classrooms every year where engagement strategies are being used… but students still rely on the teacher for all cognitive heavy lifting.
True learner agency happens when students:
✔️ Make meaning independently
✔️ Own the learning process
✔️ Carry the cognitive load
✔️ Engage deeply with the work
The challenge?
Most schools are trying to increase engagement without changing the leadership systems that support instruction.
At KINLCon 2026, I’ll be sharing practical strategies leaders can use to move this work from theory into implementation.
Because engagement-focused change doesn’t happen through another initiative.
It happens through intentional leadership moves, aligned instructional practices, and sustainable systems.
Hope to see you there.

Student engagement is a top priority in schools right now…
But many classrooms are still heavily teacher-driven.
When students don’t own their learning:
➡️ Engagement drops
➡️ Cognitive demand decreases
➡️ Academic outcomes suffer
At KINLCon 2026, I’ll be sharing practical leadership strategies that help schools shift ownership from teachers to students — without adding another initiative to teachers’ plates.
In this session, we’ll explore:
✔️ What learner agency actually looks like in classrooms
✔️ Why implementation breaks down at the classroom, campus, and district level
✔️ Leadership moves that increase student engagement
✔️ 3 high-leverage strategies educators can implement immediately
If your school is working to improve engagement, instructional ownership, and student outcomes, I’d love to connect with you there.

Want to boost learner agency? Guide your teachers to Think-Sketch-Share.🎨
To build true learner agency, we must provide diverse pathways for students to externalize their thinking.
The Leadership "Why":
Lowers the Pressure: Drawing removes the immediate hurdle of syntax for ELLs and reluctant speakers.
Encourages Divergent Thinking: Sketches capture nuances—mood, setting, and subtext—that often get lost in a quick verbal sentence.
Instant Insight: A quick scan of the room gives teachers an immediate, visual map of classroom comprehension levels.
Agency isn't just about giving choices; it’s about providing the tools that make every student's internal world visible.

Is it possible to increase rigor while actually reducing teacher burnout? 🍎
Many school leaders fear that giving students more ownership means lowering the bar. But the data shows the opposite: when teachers carry 100% of the cognitive load, students stop thinking for themselves.
The result? Stagnant test scores, low skill transfer, and exhausted staff.
True rigor isn’t about quiet classrooms or teacher-led pacing—it’s about structured release. When we shift from "compliance" to "high-transfer" learning, we move the heavy lifting from the teacher to the learner.
