✂️🧵 DJW Sewing Studio – 50 Years Built From the Ground Up (1977–2027)

By Dorothy J. West

What began as a childhood love of drawing and creating in the 1970s grew into a lifelong journey of sewing, service, creativity, and community.

Established in 1977, DJW Sewing Studio was built from the ground up. From my school years to proudly serving my country in the U.S. Army beginning in 1979, sewing remained a constant thread throughout my life. While my military specialty was Supply Specialist, sewing and alterations became my self-proclaimed secondary specialty, allowing me to serve fellow Soldiers wherever my travels took me around the world.

Over the years, DJW Sewing Studio has provided alterations, repairs, custom projects, and creative solutions for countless customers. In the 1990s, the journey expanded into Sewing Sessions and Sewing Parties, creating opportunities for others to learn, create, and discover the therapeutic benefits of sewing.

My 50th Anniversary World Tour Memory Quilt

As part of this milestone celebration, I am creating a long-overdue special project:

"My 50th Anniversary World Tour Memory Quilt"

This one-of-a-kind quilt is a collaboration of memories stitched together through time:

🪖 Army insignia saved from sewing on fellow Soldiers' uniforms

🎖️ Buttons and zippers from my own military uniforms

👕 Personal T-shirts collected throughout my life, travels, and experiences

🧵 Fabrics preserved from meaningful sewing projects and special moments

Every piece tells a story.

Every stitch represents a chapter of my journey.

Sewing Through History

One of the most meaningful chapters came during the COVID-19 pandemic. When face masks were urgently needed, I dedicated my time, fabric, and skills to creating masks for my community.

Those masks became more than fabric and thread—they became symbols of care, protection, compassion, and hope.

Serving With Purpose

Whether sewing insignia on military uniforms, teaching new sewists, creating custom projects, hosting sewing sessions, or making quilts filled with memories, the mission has always been the same:

Serving with Purpose.

The photographs from this collection tell that story—from Army service and early sewing days to community sewing events, face-mask production, quilting projects, and the creation of my anniversary memory quilt.

Thank You

To my family, friends, customers, fellow Soldiers, sewing students, and community members:

Thank you for supporting DJW Sewing Studio throughout these incredible 50 years.

Your encouragement, trust, friendship, and support have helped make this journey possible.

Together, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and continue stitching together the future.

We thank you for allowing us to serve you.

With gratitude,

Dorothy J. West
