Lower unit out, gear oil checked, seals inspected. The kind of job you do not want to find out is necessary on a Saturday morning at the ramp.

If your boat has been making weird noises, vibrating, or losing performance, get it in. The longer these jobs sit, the more they grow.

Tuesday Tip: Learn to read your tell-tale.

That little stream of water coming out the side of your outboard is not decoration, it's one of the most important gauges on your boat. It tells you the water pump is moving cooling water through the engine.

What you want:
-Strong, steady stream at idle and underway. That is normal.

What to watch for:
-Weak or pulsing stream. Could be a clogged tell-tale tube (try clearing it with air, if available) or a failing impeller.
-No stream at all. Shut the engine down. Now. Please. An impeller failure can kill an outboard in minutes from overheating.
-Hot tell-tale water you can barely touch. Engine is running hot. Get it looked at before it the repair is too costly.

Impellers are wear items. Most manufacturers want them replaced every two to three years regardless of hours. If you cannot remember the last time yours was changed, the answer is too long ago.

Long weekend in the rear-view, bays full, phones ringing. This is the part of summer where we start hearing from everyone who took the boat out for Memorial Day and found out something is not quite right.

Tuesday Tip: Hurricane season starts Sunday. Start your plan now, not in August.

Atlantic hurricane season officially opens June 1. Every year we see the same thing- people scrambling the week a storm enters the cone. The fix is doing the work now, when it is calm.

Quick checklist:
-Decide ahead of time: haul out, dry stack, or stay in the slip. Have a backup if your marina fills up.
-Inspect your lines, chafe gear, fenders, and cleats. Replace anything questionable.
-Take photos of your boat, hull ID, engine serial numbers, and current condition. Email them to yourself.
-Verify your insurance coverage and named-storm deductible BEFORE a system forms.
-Top off fuel. Pumps go down when power goes down.
-Pull electronics, cushions, canvas, and loose gear that can become projectiles.
-Have a written plan with your marina or storage facility. Know who is responsible for what.

During these safety inspections you might find your bilge pumps aren't working or there's a leak where the shaft seals; these problems can be detrimental and lead to even more costly repairs. Call us now to get on the schedule, but above all stay safe out there!

Memorial Day

While we fire up the grills, launch the boats, and enjoy the long weekend, we remember the men and women who never came home so that we could. The freedom to drop the lines and head out on the water on a Monday morning is not free, and it never was.

To the families who carry that loss every day- Thank you. We see you.
