TUESDAY TIP: The use of CorrosionX (or similar products)
Marine electrical connections live one of the hardest lives in any vehicle. Salt air, standing humidity, temperature swings, vibration, occasional splashes. Copper corrodes. Terminals swell. Green fuzz forms. Contact resistance goes up. Voltage drops. Things stop working right -intermittent first, then permanent.

Where to put it:
~Battery terminals. After you clean the posts and connect the cables, pack the terminal ends with dielectric grease. This alone will stop most of the green fuzz that eats battery connections in a Florida environment.
~Trailer plug (both ends). The 4- or 7-pin plug that connects your trailer lights is one of the most common electrical failure points on any towing setup. A dab of grease inside the plug and on the pins seals it against corrosion and dramatically extends its life.
~Spark plug boots. Push the boot back over the plug with a small amount of grease inside. Prevents the boot from bonding to the plug over time and keeps moisture out of the spark path.
~Any exposed connection you can reach. Fuse block terminals, ground connections, coil primary connections, ECU plugs if they've ever been apart.

You might not notice a huge different but your wallet definitely will when things aren't failing as often.

Monday.

Fall officially arrives tomorrow. On paper, anyway. In Titusville it means the mornings are quieter, the light is softer, and the water is doing its best work of the year. It's a good time to make an appointment if you have any repairs nagging the back of your mind. Get on the schedule before it fills up, it happens fast.

Friday is here which means the weekend will be too.

We've had a lot of rain lately so keep an eye on the radar if you plan on going out. A small cloud can turn into downpour quickly so just keep you and any passengers safe. All these storms are a great reminder to do a check of all safety equipment on the boat (i.e. lifejackets, radio, flares, etc.). Always better to take the extra time than risking it on the water.

>Trim IN (engine tucked toward the transom):
~Bow drops. Boat gets on plane faster from a standstill.
~Handles chop from the front better -- knife through instead of bounce over.
~Increases wetted surface, which slows top sp*ed and burns more fuel.
~Right choice: getting on plane, running into a head sea, launching in shallow water.
>Trim OUT (engine kicked away from the transom):
~Bow lifts. Less hull in the water. Boat runs faster and burns less fuel.
~Ride gets softer in following seas or flat water.
~Too far and the prop starts ventilating -you feel RPMs surge without sp*ed, and the boat porpoises (rocks up and down).
~Right choice: cruise on flat water, running with a following sea, chasing fuel economy on a long run.
>How to actually use it in real conditions:
1. Get on plane with trim IN.
2. Once you're up, trim OUT slowly until you feel the boat lighten and sp*ed increase for the same throttle.
3. Keep going until you feel either porpoising OR the prop starts to ventilate.
4. Trim back in slightly until it's clean and stable.
That's your sweet spot for those conditions. Sea state changes = adjust again.

Trim tabs (if you have them) do the same thing side-to-side and let you correct for uneven weight distribution or a crosswind that's pushing you off level.

It's Wednesday and the door still seems to be revolving, just at a slower rate.

Just as we send an invoice and call the customer to pickup a boat, we have another customer pulling in. We love the constant flow of work it keeps us motivated throughout the week, and stuff is starting to slow down, so if you've been holding off on a repair call to get an appointment now while the schedule isn't so full.

TUESDAY TIP: Your Prop is important!

Now we all know hitting something hard can damage a prop. But sometimes the pitch of the prop is out of range for the boat. You might have noticed it before without realizing.

Run the boat with a normal load. Trim it out to your sweet spot. Push the throttle wide open on flat water and watch the tach.
~Below the range: Prop is over-pitched. Engine is lugging. You're not making full power, you're burning extra fuel, and long-term you're stressing internals. Drop pitch.
~Above the range: Prop is under-pitched. Engine is over-revving. Same problem in the opposite direction- wear accelerates, top sp*ed drops. Add pitch.
~In the range: You're where you should be.

Sometimes we buy boats assuming everything is properly set up. If you're unsure next time you mention it next time you come in.

Customer question this week: "Do I really need to replace my water pump impeller if it's not leaking?"

Yes. And here's why.

The impeller is the little rubber-vaned wheel inside your water pump that pushes cooling water through the engine every time it runs. It's the entire reason your engine doesn't cook itself. When it's healthy, you don't think about it. When it fails, you don't have long before serious damage happens.

But here's the trap: impellers rarely "leak" or give you obvious warning. What they do is:

~Get old and stiff (rubber hardens over time, even sitting in storage)
~Wear the vane tips down (reducing flow you can't see from outside)
~Lose vanes entirely (chunks can travel downstream and clog the cooling passages -now you have TWO problems)
~Take a set (deform to the shape of the housing after long storage, reducing pumping efficiency)

You don't see any of that from the outside. Your tell-tale p*e stream might still look normal-ish, right up until the day it doesn't -and by then you've already run hot enough to damage something.

If yours hasn't been replaced in the last year, add it to the fall service list.

Some diagnostics don't go how you'd expect.

We've chased problems and been thrown off many times. Sometimes we're looking in the right area and it's just a matter of recreating the problem to truly test a solution. Not every job is easy, even with years of experience, but we always figure it out and it's always nice to figure out issues you don't come across too often.
