We wanted to make you aware of an upcoming change to NBCOT’s exam retake policy.

We’ve heard feedback from both candidates and program directors about the challenges associated with longer waiting periods between exam attempts. In response, NBCOT is adjusting the waiting periods to provide candidates with greater flexibility.

Beginning today, the following waiting periods will apply:

Attempts 2, 3, and 4: 30 days from the date of the last exam administration
Attempts 5, 6, and 7: 60 days from the date of the last exam administration
Attempts 8 or more: 90 days from the date of the last exam administration

The new waiting periods will also apply to candidates who are currently waiting to retest. For some candidates, this means they may be eligible to reapply and schedule their next exam sooner than under the current policy. The updated waiting period will automatically be reflected in the candidate’s MyNBCOT account today.

While the policy provides greater flexibility, we continue to encourage candidates to test when they feel ready and to use the time between exam attempts to reflect, focus their preparation, and address areas where additional study may be helpful.

We wanted to make sure you were aware of the change so that you can answer questions and help students and graduates understand when they may be eligible to reapply.
